Hey folks,

Im new to marines and recently picked up a sweet Deltec 90 wich has me hooked. Im now upgrading and have a fluval 240 ready to go. Im just wondering what, if any, the difference is between the different types of cured live rock that are available. Is it just asthetics or is there more to it like time it takes for the coraline to take hold etc? Ive been quoted what I think is a good price or Fiji Grade A, but dont want to rush into anything yet. Also, is mixing two different types a bad idea? Cheers,

Platty should be along a bit later, if I remember rightly he has done an 'in-depth' study of the water in the Capital.

I also got the JBL CristalProfi e1500 for the guts of about 138 Euro in seahorse aquariums in dublin, Great pump had no problems with it, and the filter media is very cheap for different types too for when you need them.

good luck :D

I just cut the foam so there was no sharp edges and try to get it natural looking, i bought a heat gun for 12 euro to try give it a rocky effect but there was no need and it was too hot. The cement can be mixed a little thicker to give you different bumpy areas. I also left 2 hallows that i now filed with sand and have a few plants in just to break up the rock a little bit. The cement is grey but if you add just a tiny bit of brown cement colouring you can get some nice shades. As i said, It took me an extra week trying to get the right shade that i was happy with. Or you could add a little, very little bit of black colouring and make different shades of grey.

Ian Bono is looking for his shoes back.

First fish was a goldfish that lived for a few years in a cistern off a toilet sunk in to the ground. I dont think he was ever fed or at least i dont remember having food for him.

First tropical i think was a swordtail. one with the double sword and long dorsal.
That dint last long after adding the oscars

First marine fish was a pair of Damsels (Pomacentrus alleni). The female jumped from the tank after about 2 years and i still have the male.

Excuse my newbism but agitate the water surface?

What I mean by this is create movement on the surface of the water. Installing an airstone should achieve this to some degree. If you are using an internal filter you may be able to raise it so the return nozzel is close to the surface and this will create ripples across the top of the water. This effect helps with gaseous exchange and makes for a more oxygenated system. If your near north Dublin I have an airstone and pump you can have.

I haven't been to the parnell store for a good few while now.

Used to pop in to chat with Drew (I think it was his presence that originally took the store into the realms of a good selection of fish), then later with Gav (and I'm also a reptile keeper, so had a few things to chat to Gav with), a rather pleasant young lady, and some of the other guys (of whom I am not always certain of their names).

So, will that mean that there will be an even more limited selection of fish in the city centre? or might there be a revival.

Not too certain if I know who wolfsberg is.....but maybe we chatted at sometime. So, I'll say Hi.

ian
ahem..hate be picky :-)) but I was there before drew.I started the shop downstairs.....

Soz Gav.......I didn't know you back in them days when Drew was there.

I'd known Drew from a shop in Monkstown, and so he was the only one I recognised when I ventured into Parnell Street.

So, I'll take back my comments and say.....

due to me not knowing anyone else in Parnell Street, I, in retrospective correctness, mistakingly cited Drew without mentioning Gavin's name as forwarding the fish collection there.

If Justine found out that I'd done you mis-justice then I'd be nagged.

But, that doesn't explain where you where hiding in those days, Gav.....B)

I actually remember the first time of meeting you....November 2006 (we'd just got back from some falconary in Ashford Castle....not that we are millionaires to afford staying there loike).
Justine thought you were a thoroughly pleasant fellow.

just lucky that the tank is salvagable.

will let yas know when we're doing it, and will be back for more advice!B)

I think in the light of subsequent replies you have chosen the right option.

I have effected repairs in the manner I described, only ever 'end' repairs though, but in all honesty they never looked anything other than 'botched' - which is fine for in a Fish House, or Fishroom but not particularly attractive in a 'display' environment.
If you follow platty's guidelines you should be fine.
I would just add something which he has omitted - after you have the glass cleaned of unwanted old silicone you should rub the glass over with something to remove the oily residue there might be from your fingerprints, silicone is very reluctant to adhere to anything the least bit oily. As detergent is undesirable to fish-life I have found that Methylated Spirits on a clean cloth does the job pretty well.
Hope this helps,
John

I might be of some assistance on this topic, being a carpenter helps ha. You should be fine wit a 200ltr as the other lads stated spreading the tank over the space of a few joists and id suggest keeping the tank on an external wall rather than the middle of the house, also a stud finder wont help u as it beeps wen near timber and if you put it on a timber floor it will jus keep beeping ha:-D but if you kept the tank in the corner between 2 external walls you'll be fine.
When I lived in Florida I went to a few fish shops and you should see the prices there. I seen hermits for 50 cent YES 50 CENT clown fish for $5 etc and a guy I worked with was a member of a local fish club and he said that he could get even cheaper with a discount from the fort myers club I was shocked and funny thing was that he said that alot of shops over there were over charging. My brother once paid E50 for a clown fish aprox $70 I told him and he said we must all be millionares in Ireland. I know that alot of these fish can be native to Florida so they would be cheaper but if these shops can survive at these low prices makes ya think how much can you add on for shipping.

I always pop in for a nosey when home with the family.
They always have the obscure ehiem bits in stock for very good prices!
Also managed to get some v. nice anubias nana for €3 each.
I keep thinking that the big octagonal tank woud be great for an Aponogeton specimen tank (along with a shrimp farm to keep it clean!)

No worries mate. They are tough plants and very forgiving if/when things go wrong. The java moss is great because as it grows it can be trimmed down and placed elsewhere in your tank.

Fish are often a good sign of ammonia.

What's the pH and Hardness? is the pH stable?

There are a number of things that will inhibit the bacteria. But is this happening in this case?
and if so, what?

Carbon disulphide is a well known inhibitor of nitrosofication (ammonia to nitrite).
It may also exist with a yellow smelly (radishes maybe...for anyone who eats them things) compound called carbonyl sulphide (especialy if some oxygen is present).

I'm just speculating of course (as we sometimes do at this time of night).....but if your fish are healthy then maybe think about something more obvious eg the test kit again.

You could always try a zeolite ammonia remover if you are really worried about your ammonia, but then that may hamper maturing the water.

Try removing the nature tube and seing if the colour you want is the day. Then get a second day tube.
Can't I'm afraid! The lights only work when both tubes are in place... That's why I want to make sure I'm getting what I want before I fork out!
Thanks for the suggestion though!

How about wraping something around the nature tube to black it out to check?? (be careful with kitchen foil, but it will work! Don't leave it on for long, just use to check effect.)
AFIK, the nature is about 3800ish k (looks yellow), whereas the day is 6500k (looks natural).
If you have a good relationship with your local shop, borrow (pay deposit!!) a day, reef day and reef blue and play with the combinations till you get what you like. If the local gets the repeat sales from you, they will be happy to help, and will probably offer a discount on the yearly bulb changes.
(hint, change one bulb every 6 months. Less adjustments for fish, plants and algae)

I checked the filter today and found a split along the side of the distributor plate. When i move it with my finger it moves like it is hinged.
I think with the flow of water the water returning to the tank is getting mixed with the water in the pre filter section.

I will contact the shop tomorrow to see about getting this part replaced.

To get to Searorse coming from N7, go over the red cow interchange, keeping to the left lane all the way down to the long-mile angor rd junction (just after woodies). Then follow the semi round-about (look at google maps! will make sense then), turning right all the time to essentially do a u-turn and head back to the south.Back on the N7, stick to the left lane, and as you pass the red cow hotel take the very next left turn onto turnpike road. Seahorse are opposite the red-cow hotel's exit onto turnpike, look for the baby goods sign, the lads are round the back.

I would agree with regular water changes and good quality food. Also pay attention to your pH/GH/KH. Africans absorb minerals from the water which helps healthy growth and development. There are products you can buy, but you can also easily do it wiht epsom salts, marine salt and baking soda.

However, there are some fish that are just slow growers and there's not much you can do about it. Moori (dolphins) would be a good example.

I am looking for more smaller roots, have granite rocks in there now also. Probably the tank will be very different in a few months.

@4

Its set up like it is as I have 4 plecos 2 eels 13 loaches and 4 large upsidedown cats. So many dark place dwellers that I need to set it up this way. With the plecos I need lots of wood, the royal scrapes almost every bit daily and there is a lot in there.
have to have a decent few shaded spots for my loiterers:)

Markku has left the building

Thanks John, I was waiting until yesterday to do the salt treatment so I could be the one who does it and monitor her but I haven't been able to find aquarium salt in the local shops so I think I will have to use cooking salt. The filaments haven't grown any bigger at least and she is still acting normal.

I did however come home to a couple of losses. Lost 1 guppy (the youngest), my 2mo platy, sparkling gourami and my 2 kuhli loaches appear to have vanished without a trace though i'm hoping they will appear during the water change. My sparkling gourami was.. well completely flattened, so I suspect whoever removed the breeder box after my baby platy died probably caught the gourami against the wall :(

On the plus side, new api kit says pre-water change nitrate is ~15, everything else 0, and one of my endlers dropped some fry. Managed to catch 3 before they got eaten and they are doing great on baby brine shrimp.

The male endlers who had red marks are behaving normally again though there is still a bit of red visible so fingers crossed it starts to fade.

Jay, there are a good few fish in the tank, about 45 now, mostly small fish though and the nitrate should hopefully stay low now that I have it back to the normal level. It was between 5 and 10 when I left and it looks now to be about 15 (closer to 20 than 10 but not quite 20) so I think weekly water changes will keep it below 20. I do a monthly filter clean when i'm changing the carbon and floss so filter should be ok. I think it was the overfeeding that caused the nitrate build up so I have measured out how much to give per day and they are not allowed veer from it no matter how much the fish beg!

Hi,

I have bought live rock from the UK in the past myself and it was ok up to a point some of it was good but on the other hand a lot of it was fairly bad. There really is no better way than going into a shop or private sellers and looking at the rock picking the bits that you want yourself, feeling the weight of each peice and making sure that it is good quality.

This is an interesting thread: for a number of reasons.

Old School vs New School (actually to show I'm trendy, I'll rephrase thar as 'Old School vs New Skool).

The definition of 'Old School' and 'New School' is a bit fuzzy.
There are equal (maybe even more) bits of rubbish and myyths about fishkeeping in New School as there were in Old School.
But that does leave me in a problem area....I'm not really sure what 'old school'is supposed to be.
If we talk about Science, then I would say that the percentage of scientifically correct information in fish keeping was much higher way back when than it is today. (and that is a bold statement from a old haggered scientist-fishkeeper).

I have a book from the 1930s (by William Innes) from which we can see a clear trend of copying that original (and great) work right up to present day.
There is a lot of continuing old ideas and limitations
eg it may have been difficult to maintain 86F for Discus when using a slate bottom tank and 50 candles as was needed in the 1930s......but it is madness to see people nowadays write on the difficulty in maintaining high temperatures even though we've had good heaters for years. That type of thing indicates that some notions are still carrying on through time.

I am amazed to see present writers quoting bacteria doing nitrification in marine tanks...yet the species they cite are freshwater- or soil-only bactera. What? has someone started writing the paragraph and then suddenly started copying a piece of text from a book on "Agricultural Soil and Ploughing implications"?

Probably not.
It is more likely plagerism of something that was wrong in the first place....and the new author doesn't realise that. Hence, the reason why one may find lots and lots of references to something....but all are not correct or are not actually scientifically based.

Nitrates? Nitrates are hazardous to fish.
However, many biochemical processes are competitive in nature or allow for some antagonism. Therefore, under some conditions there may be no noticable effect of water nitrates on fish......but that does not mean that nitrates are harmless to fish. If there are rampant elephants attacking everyones house in Africa, then I'm pretty safe here in Ireland. That doesn't mean that rampant elephants are harmless per se.

When it comes to water chemistry, I have seen some nonesense presented in quite long articles on the internet. It is one thing to give quickie answers on a forum that are partially correct or pseudo-science; but there is no excuse for authors to write a full book-like article and present it as 'the facts'.

I'm also quite suspicious of 'new school' being another name for 'marketing'.

Now, here's a thought that maverick scientists (like myself maybe) might through out there: "if we can show that science 50 years was wrong, then who is to say that we are correct now?"

I have an external running on a 180L and i clean it out probably once a month, which most likely isn't needed but i have a lot of plant leaves getting sucked in from new plants acclimatising.

The internal i have on my 120L i clean probably every second water change, i have 2 different colour sponges in it and i only clean one at a time.

As for water changes, i think what platty said is spot on. Tests are a great way tojudge when and how often to change your water. For me its about 15% for my 120 and 30% on my 180 to try battle the damned algae. Usually its about 15-20% too.

I wouldn't over clean, you could do more damage than good.

Glad to hear there were no deaths in the tank!! I would say if you know a qualified electrician, they could have a look at it, and see if they can get it working again. I'd say thats the best way to find out if you can get it fixed, or not!

RO is essentially pure water.
The problem with drinking it, like putting fish straight into it, is that the water in our bodies, and in fish, has various salts dissolved in it. This means that through osmosis, cells can take up too much water, which can cause them to explode, in extreme cases. Hence the market in re-mineralising products available.
Also, the salts and minerals in our bodies need to be replaced as they get used.

The bit about stagnant areas isn't really about 'dirty tanks'.

There is a stage in the life cycle of the Oodinium that requires that stage to be off-the-fish and stationary.
Hence, water movement disrupts that stage.

I have the Slimeline 3D Back to Nature background in a 350l African Cichlid Setup which was installed 5 weeks ago, (cost @80yoyos from a Sponsor).

It already has matured really well to look less artificial and blends in better now with my rocks.
I removed my internal filter and replaced it with 2 Tetratec EX1200, glad I did.

However, I have an 84l tank which I am planning on planting with a moss wall,
as I think it looks really well.

This pic is before it started to mature and darken.

Darren,
It has been my experience that Angels (domesticated varieties anyway) will lay eggs every 12-15 days. Although obviously if they still have eggs/fry this timetable can be forgotten.

What tends to happen in that scenario (ie you're lucky to have a pair which cares for their eggs and subsequent fry) is that when the fry are free-swimming and tending to 'drift away' from the attentions of the parents (and there is no definite timescale to this) the adults tend to start looking to breed again and then will view their offspring as a food source as the parental motivation leaves them and switches to a new lot of eggs either laid or about to be laid.
This isn't always the case, I once had a most unusual pair which just ignored the original fry when the new eggs were laid...but for me, that was unique and my intervention ended that!

Unfortunately, it's too late at night for me to go into a fuller scientific analysis....and Justine is chatting to me as I write (she has 5 topics on the go at the same time.....multiplexed scentences B) ).

the chemistry of carbon dioxide is not as simply in theory as the link above says; and is even more complex in reality.
The underlined statement seems to assume pure water at pH7.

In addition to the actual pKa's of carbonic acid, the partial pressures and atmospheric pressure also affects the CO2/carbonic acid equilibrium.

But a drop of pH from 9.0 to 5? That is rather large.

There are a number of causes of that...eg test kit not working, or very low buffers in water.
Maybe even sounds like a nitrous or nitric acid induced pH crash in water with little buffering.

But, I would say you need further water checks (eg hardness and pH).

I have five female Bettas for sale. All are metalic teal/blue (carrying copper), Halfmoon/Superdeltas. Their parents are Thailand imports and show quality fish:

Their father is a copper Halfmoon:

Their mother is a metalic royal blue Halfmoon Plakat:

Their mother is a very good breeder (one of the best I've owned), always eager to spawn and there is a good chance that her daughters have taken after her.

They are spawn sisters and have never been apart so you wouldn't have to worry about fighting if they are kept together.

Unfortunately I haven't a proper camera on hand at the moment and my phone camera is pretty crap so the best picture that I could get was this:

That picture doesn't really do them justice at all, especially colourwise. For a better idea of what colour they are in the flesh here is a picture of somebody else's fish that is the same shade of teal as mine:

Can't stress enough that this particular fish is not one of my own.

€10 each. I'm in the North Dublin area.

Hi Alan,
I am satisfied with this feeder. Food is not getting wet, it's dry !! but there is an electorstatics effect that causes food stickes to the container walls but it is just enough to knock it and everything works good. For the first week I'd advise you to pay great attention to the feeder to establish proper level of food given to your fish. You shouldn't leave it uncontroled for the first week - just learn to use it. It's worth the money I paid but obviously I wouldn't spend 50 for it. It is good to use it when you are away or haven't time but it won't replace manual feeding and contact with your fish. I.m going to use it in the morning (when I 'm in a hurry) with a minimum quantity of food and then to feed them manually in the afternoon. Generally, I would recommend it for everybody who is very bussy but fish as other animals need contact with us or maybe we need contact with our fish to maintain relationship with them. :-D

Ber,
Really, in an ideal world your Ammonia should be zero...

I fear you are, like Kev says, going to end up having bought every chemical in the store in the hope of hitting on the right one.
I never would use pH up as you can achieve a similar result for less (but by trial and error) using Baking Soda.
However, I have tried the Waterlife pH reducer - but stopped this as it just clouded up the tank's water, covering everything with a thin film of white 'powder', for want of a better word. They claim this is a fairly normal reaction and that it disappears (which it did) but it didn't seem right - and, incidentally, didn't reduce the pH!.

As Derek says, cut down, or even stop feeding your fish for a few days, you'll do no lasting damage but with nothing going into the tank the fish are making less waste (trying to be diplomatic here) which will help the clearing and cycling process.

It will work out right in the end, I guarantee it.

Great photos. What lens you got with it. The 18-55 mm? If you get overexposed images try to set the camera to manual, use exactly the same settings, but close the aperture a step OR reduce the iso used, that's at list what I whould try. To reduce the shutter speed as I see u used 1/50 sec to the next step whould be even a better option in fast moving fish but you whould need to have steady hands or a trepied.

To try to get the camera to do that for you try when u focus to point not exactly on the bogwood but to get half of your subject and half of the white sand, otherwise the lighter parts of the image are gonna be overexposed.

Not a master of photography but anyone with more experience around can correct(if the case) or complete whould be very helpful.

A bit of info has to be gathered on the problem.

If this always happens to certain people and has always been a problem
If anyone has this on and off, intermittently, what is different now it works\doesnt work?

Depending on answers to the above questions as only some people are affected. Need to know.
Which operating system, browser and firewall & Antivirus and ISP to check for similarities between those with the issue.

This is all only thinking out loud as dbadmin probably know the issue and are going to sort it, or are working it but have identified the problem.

Either way, I think the config differences between myself included with no issues, even with a newly installed machine, or mobile phone, and those with the problem are what may be causing the issue.

I have a 300w smart heater in my 260l, I am very fussy about what visible equipment I have in tanks. I use it in conjunction with my external and I think it's the business. It's very inconspicuous as a heater and inconspicuous as a filter intake... roll that into the one thing and you're onto a winner. Reliability-wise I've heard a couple of bad things about them but that won't stop me from using this model any time soon!

You're right - a very good plant, especially for a larger tank.
They can tend to grow out above the water surface but I found that as long as you kept cutting off the tops and replanting them in the gravel you could have a never-ending source. Great and easily-grown plant (and that coming from a plant murderer!!!).

Subject: A few suggestions for successful sales. - by: JohnH

As a long-term Forum purchaser of items offered for sale here I thought it worth making one or two suggestions to would-be sellers and buyers.
Firstly read the previously posted guidelines.

1] Always include the whereabouts of where the item(s) is/are located, this will make it easier for would-be buyers to decide whether it's convenient to them
2] In the words of the old saying: - "A picture is worth a thousand words" (I nicked that phrase from ebay) so, if at all possible try to illustrate whatever you're selling with a picture of the thing actually advertised (but if not possible and a picture to illustrate is available online, use that - but make it very clear the picture isn't the actual thing you're advertising).
3] I have observed that ads asking for offers very rarely get serious offers - if you know how much you're looking for for something it might be better for all concerned if you ask for that amount in the first place...you'll inevitably get someone who doesn't want to pay the asking price make a lower offer anyway so you might want to bear this in mind also.
and...
4] when the item is sold - please post on the Forum that it has gone - or, in the case of multiple items being offered, please amend your ad to delete items sold.

For buyers:

1] I find it helps others interested if you mention on the Forum that you have either phoned the seller (if he has offered a contact number) or sent a Personal Message...
2] If you don't want to pay the asking price please make a serious offer, not a derisory one.

I can't think offhand of any more suggestions, but will add any others as and when they appear.

Hi Mickey,
that's a very good question and you got me completely off guard here as i am not very familiar with the different types so i just rang the supplier where they come from and....they didn't know either
i am very sorry about that and all i can tell you is that i have two different Endler's,one from a reputable wholesaler(who didn't know) and some others from a breeder.i wil try and get more infos.
Saying this,if you like,i could get you some red breasted Endler's.
also available the "Venus" guppy which looks like an Endler's but without black or orange and rather pink and yellow?doubt it is of wild origine...
and also jamaican blue guppy which is wild and "very pretty" as my supplier mentioned.
once again sorry i couldn't answer...:(

if you are dosing co2 (gas) 24h it's ok, or few single doses of liquid co2 won't affect on ph as well, but overdosing can drop ph down. I will buy liquid or tablets co2 for myself as well :-D but won't use it in tank with fishes just in 'plants trays' to grow moss and limnobium quicker :D

i had two striped talking cats. One bigger one was almost 7', other around 6'. Very shy fish most active in night. Territorial, but not great fighter fish, and always were keeping away from smaller albino gibbiceps. One big minus.. after night my ground covering plants were floating on top, because this fish don't care about anything when is looking for food..

Im just about to take the plunge into marines myself and from what Ive been reading the lights you are using will be great for soft corals and lps. If sps tickle your fancy then I would use metal halides. Im sure more experienced reefers will point you in the right direction. Best of luck with the new setup. Cant wait to see the pics ;) .

I got a betta 1000 of Kealan in seahorse e few months back. However i went the ATI sunpower lights from seahorse. They are 6 * 39 watt which i think gives me enough light as i have 2 red bubble anemones which are never stretched trying to get light and are always bubble tipped now while before when i had metal halide they would always be stretched. If you have the extra few pound i would go talk to Kealan obout he ATI'S. It also sits on the top of tak as they can be placed close to the water surface which means i dont have anything hanging out of the Roof or wall which pleases the wife. The Ati's are the lights they have over there Coral tanks.

Hi,
the normal way would be to keep them in fairly big groups(aswell more females than males).Keep them in sparely decorated tanks, good water with weekly waterchanges, vegetarian food or Nls and try not to increase the group with new fish(buy enough in the first time). If you have to add new arrivals-redecorate the tank and leave the light of for one day.But sometimes it works different aswell.

There was an article some while back where parts of a deforested area along the Amazon were not used for arable/catch cropping and via satellite you could see, how, in a very short time, 5 years or so, the whole area had regenerated giving rise to a mini version of the forest that was there before it, the planet, minus it's disease, us, heals rapidly without human help.

I have moved it umpteen times, in and out of filter flow, I have totally removed the Filter Guard to expose it totally to the moving current, I have reset it, I have left it off over night, put it into cold water on and on and still get the error, should I conceed and say, hey, it's faulty, end of?

Hi, thanks for the advice :) I replanted a bit to divide the tank more in half so line of sight is mostly broken, and the bigger male seems to have claimed the left side, and the smaller guy the right. The female has been drifting between territories unhassled, though she's mainly spending time with the bigger male.

I will probably return one of the males, but I might just see if the peace lasts, the smaller one was the aggressor but he seems to be respecting the invisible line in the sand for now. If I see any aggression more than a sideways display I will definitely take 1 out. :)

For anyone interested, I checked the rules of this Competition and find that only images which have been awarded a Prize on that - or another - site, or in a Competition like our Forum one are unacceptable as entries.
I hope this clears up the confusion for everyone (and me).

Damien,
I understand your confusion.
I still think your best bet will be to put something (your suggestion of shims sounds good if you can get them) under the cabinet.
You would really, I reckon, need to keep all load-bearing parts in contact with the floor, even though some will be 'shimmed'.
The pressure on the glass and the silicone joints will be greater if there is any unevenness and unfortunately the Polystyrene will not even this up by compressing more on the end which is higher (I do hope I'm making sense here).

I do hope you can get this sorted, it's really frustrating to find your floor is so uneven. Hopefully it's only an end to end 'slope' mine was also higher at the wall than it was 2ft away from it!

Thanks for the back-up info Alan.
I'm a little surprised that Wild-caught Boesmani are available again. Export of Wilds was banned as they were, not unlike the Microgalaxy Rasboras (or whatever they're called now) overfished for the Aquarium market and were in grave danger of becoming extinct. Still, with L-046s being sneaked out of Brazil despite a ban on their export I suppose it's, again, a case of "Money Talks".

I'm thinking that morally I shouldn't...but I'd be angry with myself if I let the chance pass without spending a small fortune for at least one pair...I'm wondering now if they have females too, sometimes only males get exported - that would be a pity.

From 100 deg to -10 is quite a jump, but tbh after a good long sauna its a relief for the first 2 seconds. Then it gets coooold.
feels like rum in your veins after the initial pain subsides though I was that cold that when I went back to the sauna I put on lots of water on the stones, not feeling the heat yet went a bit mad with the water and of course burnt my mouth nose & hands trying to breathe :) Stupid Paddy:)

I have found Spinach to be an excellent food for almost all fish, even Discus, when I kept them, would nibble in it.
My only complaint about the frozen stuff was that it tended to break up into little pieces and much of this would miss the attention of the fish, but that was only my observation.
I prefer getting whole leaf baby Spinach from Lidl (or somewhere like that) then 'scald' the leaves to be used with boiling water to 'blanch' them. Then all I need to remove are the uneaten stems (although the Plecos will eat those too).

I personally only used to treat the water being replaced in the days I was forced to treat water.
I take it you mean with dechlorinator?
Are you using Easy Life now? - I'm not sure about this as I don't use it, excellent though it's reputed to be. Perhaps someone with experience of it can comment?
Most of the fish you have in your smaller tank are pretty hardy so, unless you especially want to move them into your new one my advice would be to leave them where they are but keep a close eye on the Ammonia and Nitrite levels. Cut down on food and increase water changes (and testing) then only return to normal regimes in this tank when you're happy everything has settled back down again.

Hi lads
Just bear in mind the constant output on the generator in Aldi is only 650w..OK for a few tanks but I wouldn't be trying to boil the kettle at the same time...:P .the one that platty used in his link was a good deal more powerful...still though it's a good price for what could be considered an essential piece of kit for some of us.

i would have to agree with you there John!

It has also given me an idea for some thing i had been considering since my visit to the Berlin Aquarium and Zoo. i note in many of their exhibit they combined fish with other assorted animals.

here is a small example

in the shots i was trying to get aquarium contents rather than over all view, but the setup contained birds and some reptiles.

i would love to keep reptiles but one has to consider space and if following a similar set up where plants would provide a habitat to reptiles would also act as part of the filtration system could be an option.

it is some thing i will have to experiment with do i may use birds to start with as i already keep those as pets.

But from a more practical point of view, some modern tanks no longer use hoods these in particular would offer a more viable opportunity to follow this method.

i have been following their progress over the last year, and i must say its facinating that we are still finding thousands of different creatures. a lot of what they are finding are new and diff types of copeods but i have seen some great pics of new specimens, ill try find some and post them up.
this is why i love marine keeping. you never know what you will find in your tank.

I have had a few issues with it even tho the water changes have been a lot. Not excessive.

Instead of the big change now of adding say 100L of new water to the tank in a big water change I do 10L an hour to maintain the balance in the water, be it good or slihtly mature its better than fluctuation from sudden volumes of different water frequesting the aqua environment imo, and if the water has summit untowards in it then even worse. You never know what they chuck in to kill this and that. Funny how I sm more worried about the fish yet I drink it.

If they appear again, I'll pm those interested, I don't want to give the source any grief because they weren't part of any order.

I remember Van Der Graf, didn't like them all that much - I always thought they were in a jazz vein - without playing Jazz - didn't like Focus either - for much the same reason, although Jan Akkerman was undoubtedly a very accomplished guitarist.

I've racked my excuse for a brain to come up with a Fish-connection and it was there all the time - one of my favourite Blues songs of all times - "Catfish Blues"!!!
I first heard this in an acoustic style by the inimitable Muddy Waters (although I seem to recall it was actually a song by a previous Blues great, possibly Robert Johnson) but then...along came Rory with Taste, and after that I also have heard Jimi Hendrix versions too...but for me, the Taste version (just called Catfish) at Montreux (Live Taste) is probably the definitive version.

"wonder how big of a tank i would need?"

Quite a large one, I would venture to suggest.

That is a rather 'unorthodox' fish, isn't it?

But strangely attractive at the same time.

Nice to see 'the comic' back online, in a strange sort of way I've missed it.

Hi Tom,

sorry to hear your news...

We use these in work when we install servers and other equipment into areas where other people tend to unplug things they shouldn't, and they work very well! another option, although a little more expensive, would be to buy a UPS and put this in.

Nice ray Ian.
Will he do Ok over gravel or will you need to replace it with sand?

Would have thought sand would be essential for their natural behaviour of burying themselves etc.
Hi patrick, I'll grow it out this way for now. That is definitely the way it should. Feeding wise I actually did better before in bare bottom tanks. I also had one in a fine gravel set-up and you dont see the ray as its buried so its aesthetically but not naturally effective.

Unfortunately not john ... but i still reckon they were from one oof the keyhole spawnings ...... have rearranged the tank in the past week and have even reduced the stock by a few fish in an effort to have the keyholes as stress free as possible if and when they go again .....

I've been told to stick with it and eventually they'll get it right so its fingers crossed

Having said this , I am presently up to my eyeballs in fry from my breeding pair of brichardi so maybe a bit longer wait for the keyholes wouldn't be a bad thing

cracks def worse as already saud they grow with vibration from road traffic music ect, used to be a glazier meself, always replace a cracked panel or you are eventually looking at trouble generally. As for chips, dept of the chip is the important bit, too deep and the pressure and vibration will crack the glass. Minor chips, most small chips are fine, as said use emery cloth or same to smooth so you dont take a knuckle off when doin maint.

It may be difficult at that size but generally the males are the lookers in this species. He will develope a pointed dorsal fin that will trail behind him and will, if its a gold saum develope a fantastic colouration to its tail and a beautiful metallic green body. He will, with time develope a hump on his forehead. Though I have seen some fantastic females, they are usually a bit drap, at least when compared to the males and their dorsal fin will be rounded as opposed to pointed.

ive taken your advice on board on hit them on the head for the moment so ive kept fish for a few years but as i said this is my first venture into africans thanks so much but what about fontosa s any reccommendation s

You're very welcome, I've been keeping Africans a few years now & its always good to see more people getting into it.

Frontosa are best kept in 6 foot tanks, I kept a trio for a couple of years & while they're nice fish they just didn't do it for me.
They're piscivores so will eat any tankmates that can fit in their mouths, best kept in groups & ideally in species-only tanks.

In my opinion the best starter fish for getting into African cichlids are mbuna, they're tough, colourful, easy to breed & available.
They do have a specialist diet though, do best if kept in overstocked numbers with heavy filtration & you need to be careful with male/female ratios.
Some species are crazy aggressive too so you need to know what you're buying.

Actually sounds complicated when I read it back but its not, just needs a little research before starting.

Cheers,

Ask around the shops. I know Scubadim's offer some pieces of metal weights that the cut and you can roll in a wood branch - they are ok in water and dont rust. I use them a lot and after months of soaking roots the metail pieces can be removed.

Cooked peas (I put a few in the microwave on full for 30 seconds from frozen then peel off the outer skin) are a good and nutritious food source for lots of fish, I even find that 'carnivorous' fish like Angels - and many other Cichlids will also eat some too...actually, I have some types of Dwarf Snakeheads which eat almost as many as I put into their tanks!!!
So, yes, all your 'bottom feeders' will eat Peas to some extent. If you want to try them on the Corys my way of giving peas to them is to slightly crumble the Peas between finger and thumb which makes them more manageable to the Corys. I will add that the same information applies to Sweetcorn too - although be prepared to remove either if your fish do not 'take' to them - try a little at first and remove whatever isn't eaten after a couple of hours, remembering to give them less next time.
Your Otocinclus and Pleco will also enjoy a slice of something like Cucumber (you'll need to weight it down as otherwise it will float) but remove any uneaten after a day or so, it will start to decompose, and you don't want that!!!. Another good piece of advice I was given is to use a potato peeler and peel off the green skin, some growers aren't averse to using insecticides and sometimes the residue of this can be harmful to fish gnawing on it, so I always skin whatever I give the fish first, better safe than sorry! I suppose you could buy 'organic' Cucumbers (but I have my doubts about those too and would still peel them to be on the safe side.
For clarification, only peel the section you have cut off to feed to your fish, the remainder can be left with skin on until you're ready to use it (it keeps better like that).

Sorry, I forgot the Clowns again! - they will also eat peas, sweetcorn and Cucumber, clicking away madly as they do so! - Well, mine do.

although the above is accurate for the herbivourous mbuna, there are several commonly kept mbuna which are omnivore or carnivore. the labidochromis careleus, chisimulu, textilus, joanjohnsonae, melanochromis northern blue, pseud. crabro and most of the large petrotilapias are all omnivore/carnivore and require a different diet than the herbivores. if careleus are fed too much green diet they become blotchy and lose colour.
new life spectrum food seems to be a suitable staple diet for the various malawi cichlids. although it would probably be best to know and provide the correct type of food for the individual species.

Yep.
The clues are in the teeth and jaws (in malawi at least). Really there are different levels of 'Mbuna'-isms (and all seem to be lumped as Mbuna whether they are or not)

The rapid adaptation of rift valley cichlids left some bits slightly archaeic (eg throw backs to the original riverine species) as, seemingly, a compromise for developing the massively varied feeding levels.

Lake Tanganyikan cichlids, however, show an even greater variation in trophic levels....and it is there that it is clear to see a 'plasticity' in their intestinal adaptation in response to available food quality. Obviously, some species are pretty strict about diet range, but others are quite flexible.

I suppose that varied diet is the key.

Thinking back to the 70s, many people started keeping these species (quite noevl back then, it was) and many had assumed that beause they were 'cichlids' and had lots of teeth that they could be fed heart, dog-food etc etc as was often fed to many other (=Central American) cichlids......success amongst many of my co-keepers was not great. Fortunately, the message developed that thess fish were different.

The topic of Malawi Bloat is as interesting Discus Hole-in-the-head.

Derek, yep. Most, but not all, poison dart frogs obtain their poisonous alkaloids from a dietary source.

There are some who do, however, take a relatively less toxic substance and then convert it into something a lot more toxic; and some dart frogs have toxins that have not yet been identified as being dietary in origin.

The whole subject of Dart Frog toxicity is quite fascinating, and lends some additional questions to science: eg if the toxins are from a dietary source, then the frog itself must somehow protect itself against the toxins.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the 'bright coloured means warning'(aposematic)theory of dart-frogs.

to continue on the topic of keeping malawis and avoiding undue aggression. the two main factors are tank size and diet. in many cases fish that fight viciously and cross breed in a 4 ft tank will be calmer and breed pure in a 6 ft. esp haps.
the packed tank system of keeping mbuna definately spreads or reduces aggro but increases risk of cross breeding. i have noticed a lot of long snouted but well coloured careleus around in recent times which indicates a degree of crossbreeding or excessive inbreeding in this normally pure deep water species.
in designating species, teeth and therefore diet is a major factor so it would follow that fish with a similar diet would be more closely related and more inclined to cross.
most mbuna are herbivores and virtualy all haps are not. mbuna live near rocks and vegetation in shallow water, haps live in open deeper water with little or no vegetation. mbuna live in a packed competitive location and haps live a less competitive lifestyle and can generally avoid conflict.
there are some that dont exactly fit the patern such as the deep water micro predator mbuna, lab. careleus
and the fairly omniverous hap. dolphin moori which can live with the softies and can cope with the hardmen. these two are without doubt the most popular malawi species and have been for many years.
all adult mbuna and hap males are intolerant of males of same species or similar species but if no females are present this aggro is minimal.
all of these comments apply only to adults as juveniles are fairly easy going and will eat whatever is offered.

That's interesting, the Clubs here have re-enacted the Irish Federation of Aquarist Clubs (can't remember the exact name, but that should do for the moment) and I know they would very much like to make it an affiliation of all the Clubs in the country, not just the ones 'down South'.
Would you mention the Federation at your next meeting and if your Club is interested in becoming an affiliate maybe you'll ask your Secretary to get in touch.

Kevin,
It might help your cause in selling your fish if you can give the Forum members a rough idea of where the fish are based...and not in a tank, either :o)

It gives interested buyers a bit of help if they can know where they might have to go to collect.

Are you trying to maintain the bacteria on it? If not, I would scrub it as best I could under hot water then place it in an oven or boil it for a while to be sure to kill any nasties on or in the rock. Any green spots left after that should come away easily. Just be sure to allow the rock to cool before placing it in the tank.

:)

I've just been on the calculator.....I suppose I'm about 400 dog-years old, but am 15,000 Nothobranchius-years.

Ummm. Interesting, but I still have more hair than a Nothobranchius. :)

Maybe a theme for a new competition....guess the age of IFK members as fish-ages.

John...here's some good scientific advice: buy a load of smallish Pacu's and then steal the skin off the tonnes of red grapes you bought got 'em.
It'll keep you young, and annoy the fish in one go (nothing like a pacu wagging at you with annoyance)
