Jewel Rio Filter 2 Years ago
So I got my Jewel Rio 240 home and I'm now thinking about the setup.
I just don't like the look of the built in filter and heater system.
It looks fiddly and flimsy and the enclosure is pretty big.

Has anyone experience with these and is it worth it to get maybe a fluval 3(or two) to replace the whole setup?

Hi Didihno,

I replaced the filter of my Trigon 190 for a Fluval 305

It's very worthy not only because of the space but also the water quality improve considerably but go for 305, the 205 will not be good enough

I have a Fluval 2 in my 10g tank and its working really well so far.
Question is, is one Fluval 3(05) good enough for such a big tank?

I have left the Juwel in my 450 but added a Tetratec 1200 which is brilliant, could not praise it enough, easy to set up, quiet and easy to maintain, comes with all media too. I will at some stage remove the juwel filter box, but it looks like it might be a bit tricky so while it is there I will keep it running as a filter and heater holder.

Check out the Tetratec range when looking at the Fluvals.

i have the 305 in a rio 180....its great but for a rio 240 it would be no harm to get the 405. you can turn it down slightly if its a bit strong.

I have the Tetratec EX 700 as well as the original Juwel and never had any problems - once the tank cycled itself that is.
I do find that the Juwel collects more debris from the water than the external and somtimes wonder is the external only doing about 10% of the work. That's the impression I get when I'm doing the filter maintenance anyway.
I'd say the tank will function quite well with it's own brand filter and let's face it they sell around the world with no probs. If Santa comes this year with a Trigon or something nice I would get a smaller external only as an emergency backup.
I suppose if you can afford it then go for it but if not then fiddly and flimsy it isn't and it works.

I've done some reading up on this and I think I'm gonna go for an internal filter for now, but that big black enclosure is history. Sure it takes up a tenth of the tank.

Thanks all.
Great link for the filter removal.
