Some times its very hard to understand actualy how big some fish can grow to be untill you actualy see a LARGE one of its kind, most fishkeepers tend to only see the babies when they visit there LFS, I have seen a large arowana (must of been nearly 2 foot) at Maidenhead aquatics they had a huge display tank the size of a Ford fiesta (in Lenght width and height) in there they had 2 Arowana and a couple of small stingrays and some other fish. Even in a tank this size they still looked like they needed a bigger tank. Some fish just belong in there natural home or in a public aquarium where they can have room for them.

I hope you continue to use these boards, I have only been on here for a few weeks and it is very helpfull.

I actually managed to take care of a 33in silver arowana which is now 12 years old in a small 100gallon aquarium. I still have it by itself - no tankmates. It used to have a spotted gar, oscar, clown loaches when it was smaller but it got aggressive towards them - so i decided to keep it by itself. The proper way to get the biggest tank you can afford to the space you have. As a bare minimum you should have a 52in long and 36 wide tank. Thats an irregular sized tank! That is if you like your arowana to grow to 36in.

Im just going to put something out there, that people might not agree with... iceman has come on asking questions about arowanna (a great thing to ask first!) he also asked how long he could keep it in there.. showing awareness that this fish is going to get big.

IMO Iceman hasnt done anything wrong here.. now if Iceman were to ask me the question. I would be asking if he plans on upgrading in the near future? what he hopes to keep in the long term? has he thought the whole process through.?
Many fish keepers i know expand their fish rooms organically rather than a once off purchase. How many people can start a 500 gallon fish room straight off?

if iceman has the funds planned for the future and plans his purchase from the start there is no reason IMO why he cant have a baby arowana in his 180. once he feels confident that he has made the right choice, then look around for the next stage in development. by this time he will have plenty of time to understand what is required if him and what size he is going to need to see the fish through its life..

just my 2 cent..
