External filter - Any ideas 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi folks, can anyone recommend an external filter for a 160 litre tank. Need it to be a quiet filter as my bedromm will be next door to it and Im literally the lightest of sleepers.
Thanks
Gavin

Hi Gavin,

I cannot recommend the Tetra Tec range highly enough. I have one in my bedroom and you can barely hear it. You can get them very cheap delivered from zooplus.ie.
I think you would need the Ex700 for your size tank and it costs about €80 including delivery.

fluval external 205 simply the best. quiet and easy maintenance 12 months no trouble, leaks and easy to get spares if i had the need only rinse every three months and i replace one sponge just because i wanted to seed another for a friend.

hi there. i have both tetratec and fluval. mmmm hard to say find both excellent. dont think you will go wrong with either. my tetratec is a new filter and find it very quite and sturdy, on other hand the fluval was used for a couple of years with no probs, then put into hibernation for over 12 years and it works fine. my hubby rekons the tetratec is the better one though.

Which ever you decide on i think it is better to get one locally.
I am in the process of returning a filter i bought on line. From the time i contacted the on line shop to organising a Currier and having it sent back to them it was about 3 weeks. That was about 2 weeks ago and still no filter.
Luckily i am not stuck for it, but if i was it would have been a case of buying a filter until this one was fixed / replaced.

I see where you are coming from on the lfs part but I cant ignore the savings online to be fair. Im all for supporting the lfs and I defo do support them right down to stuff for my pet kitten even! But the Zooplus price is good I have to say. Im thinking of getting the Tetra Tec one. I may get a heater also on there, (I have one I bought on ebay but it was remarkably cheap!). I'll prob get one that has a brand name on it at least then I know its going to be more reliable, and always good to have a spare anyhow. Again I am certainly for supporting lfs in the majority of cases.(In case all the sponsors slate me here now!!).

Also quick question, how big do angels get. Im thinking of getting one or two for the 160 litre tank and wonder what other fish I can keep. Im totally confused still as to what fish to put into the 160 litre tank.
Ive toyed with the idea of tangs,(But fear the tank will be too small),toyed with Tiger barbs but prob aggressive and other fish mates may be a problem. i really dont know.
Maybe a planted tank with alot of tetras shoaling. Gesh Im confused!!

Eheim Jager is a verry good heater.

If you cant decide on what to put into your tank try choose one type of fish and work the tank around them. You could even go for a biotope.
If you want Angels seek advice here of someone that keeps them. They should be able to advise how many you can keep in 160l.

I've had the tetra tec ex600 and an ex700 in my room on two separate tanks at the same time and managed to sleep... To be honest the tetratec air pump was noisier... I never had any problems with them...

I bought one locally for 160 euro and one online for half the price, given the reliability of the brand, I couldn't justify not saving the cash for the mere safety net of it being locally bought

Thanks all, went it the Tetratec 700 after all. Ive ordered it online but am waiting for it still, ordered it Friday morning so expect it will be here this week anyhow. I should be fine re noise,as it not in the bedroom but the room next door. (Believe me Im the lightest sleeper in the world, unless ive a few drink in me haha!). So Id rather have a quiet filter than a heap of drink thats for sure!

so many fish to choose from i know. its a shame they cant all just get along! there are so many fish i'd like to add but at the moment what i have is working out well so i just have to think of the fish i have and not add anything thats going to disrupt the peace. there is nothing worse than having a fish or two that causes havoc with the others. consider the rummy nose. i have a lge schoal and they are simply stunning. you do need a decent schoal though to see them at their best and corys are just lovely too. the torpedo barbs are pricey but fantastic. they come up to the front every time i go into the room(looking for food of course) their colours are very impresive. angels are lovely also(no experience) im sure youre more limited as what can go with them but having a tank with one species wouldnt be a bad thing. have a tank in every room - then problem of deciding between species sorted
