Hot Tap!! 6 Months ago
Hello

I was in a fish shop during the week and we were talking about water changes and the guy told me he uses the hot tap!
I would of never thought you could do that.

What do you guys think?

There are claims that warm or hot water from your tap should not be used since it tends to have a higher concentration of copper and heavy metals.

so this would definitely be a no go for marines..
with hardier species you could mabye get away with it
but why risk it.

In my (fresh water) setup I always use the hot tap, I put 5ml stress coat per 10 litres to neutralize heavy metals. Have had no problems, even the Cherry shrimp are healthy and breeding like.. well Cherry shrimp

I can recall reading that in older houses, especially if the water is hard, the copper piping and hot water tank, also made from copper, will have become coated in a sort of impermeable layer which will effectively seal the copper and ensure none is in contact with the water passing through.
This seems to be the case...but - as Arabesque says - would you want to risk it?
Even a very mild copper contamination for Marines is lethal, it's none to kind to Inverts either.

I think, but am not 100% certain it's the hot water passing over the copper in the pipes which causes it to leach sulphates into said water.

Better safe than sorry, I think.

Gotta say, I use it doing all my wc's (freshwater) with no problems. That said, I wouldnt let tap water near my marine setup no matter what the temp is. RO all the way.
