Best to experiment with smal dosed of your water to get a more accurate reading.
I use bi carbonate soda (Bread soad)to buffer my Malawi water and it works a treat.
Ph up is expensive and it either does not work or is only temporary.

Dont know anything about Koi ponds, but i do know that bicarbonate of soda and calcuim carbonate are 2 different things, if you buffer your water with bicarb of soda this will raise your KH, if you buffer your water with calcuim carbonate you will raise your KH and your GH.

One thing with calcuim carbonate is that is very hard to dissolve, much easier to use calcium chloride.

I think you will find that both of these products contain simular properties
Try this link, it could explain a little further than I went.
www.practical-water-gardens.com/how_koi_ponds_work.htm

see
The pH in a koi pond is under regular pressure from the by-products of biofiltration. When koi excrete ammonia into the pond, the processing of that toxic compound into nitrite by bacteria will inevitably release free hydrogen ions causing the water to become more acidic.

NH4+ + O2 --> NO2- + 4H+ ... Ammonia is converted by bacteria in the presence of oxygen into nitrite, releasing free hydrogen ions into the water

Now who is the rocket scientist that started this lol

In simpler terms..

Nitrate= Niitric acid. Nitric acid eats in to the kh (your buffer)of your water. If your kh drops to one or less your ph will start to crash.
