Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello there ! Been a way a while from here as I got out of fishes for a while !

Anyway , the kids got a Fluval edge 23l for Christmas and I was looking for some ideas of what to stock with . Would small cichlids work ? or maybe a betta ? Anyway any advice would be great..

Cheers ,

Brian .

I wouldnt put any cichlids in a tank that size.
A betta would be a good idea, depending on parameters you could house some small killifish

Thanks Anthony .

In terms of cichlids I was thinking a couple of small apistos maybe ? The Betta seems an easy choice alright . I don't know much about Killifish , what kind would you be talking about ?

I wouldnt keep apistos in less than 40 litres.
A trio of aphyosemion australe would live happily in a tank like yours especially if it is planted. The males are stunners and gently and if the conditions are right they will lay eggs.
Another easy killi is the pseudepiplatys annulatus (clown killifish), you could house a groupe of 5 or 10.
Personnally i prefer the aphyosemion.
If you prefer bettas, Eric breeds them so he might be to advise you on them

Thanks Anthony. That's loads to go on . Really I could keep 10 clowns in a 23l ? have you an idea how they would split males to females . I do like the looks of them i must say . However i would ask do killis not spend most of their time at the surface of the tank ?

I got my clown killis from seahorse, they sell 1 male and 4 females for 10 e.
In my tank, the males stay on the upper level and the females usually at the bottom or in the plants.
In your tank you could also keep males endlers, more entertaining than killis for the kids, if the tank is really for the children and not the dad

I have never kept them.
They seem to have the same requirements than the aphyosemion.

Seeing its for the kids what about a few guppies , they would get a real kick out of it when they get babies . We certainly need young blood into the hobby

No point putting a betta in an edge as they need access to air. The edge is designed to be filled to the top so it can be viewed from all sides including top
