Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
We ended up with 2 goldfish that were given to us 3 days ago. They are in a small tank without a pump or filter and an artificial plant. We were told they only live a short while so I reluctantly accepted. Now I have done a bit of reading online and have learnt that they can get very old and that the way we're currently keeping them will most likely kill them. I'm not ready to commit to becoming a serious fish keeper but I definitely do not want to watch the poor things die a slow death.
Does anybody in Dublin (preferably North Dublin, but I'm willing to travel if needed) have a pond or something where goldfish are kept appropriately and would be willing to adopt 2 small goldfish purchased 3 days ago?
I would be very grateful!
Julia

Thanks Homer,

that would be great!! Are the fish in your garden? Is there anything I need to do to get them ready for the colder temperature?
Would it be possible to let my kids witness the re-homing? They're still small, but I explained to them that the fish will have more space and lots of friends and they were happy enough with the thought, but I think it would be nice for them to see it.

If you PM me your email or mobile number I'll get in touch to sort out a time.

Thanks so much again!
Julia

Thanks Q_Comets,

when I googled goldfish last night I was horrified to find out that without proper surroundings the fish die of ammonia poisoning. I know there are probably millions of fish out there in this situation, but I certainly want no part in it!

Hey Julia, yep outside with White cloud mountain Minnows, just bring the fish and I will acclimatise them, it would take roughly an hour depending on the weather, it may be a tad too long and boring for the kids, but if you have the time, you can wait, I have three other rescued Goldfish and shibunkin.

Call me tomorrow, 0879975849, their final quartets will be in an outdoor pond in Dublin City University.

Hi,

So I am in a similar situation to the OP and am looking for a new home for two recently acquired goldfish.

They arrived home with our 4 year old and childminder on Saturday. After doing some research over the last few days, I know that we don't have the space for a large enough tank.

Hoping someone here has a suggestion for what to do with them?

Thanks

Hi Chris, I am stocking a courtyard pond in work, if you like, you can drop off the fish to me.
