Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Round three, August 2014

For this month's round one of our members - Inza - has kindly donated a] Two Discus which are surplus to his requirements

(The smaller one in the centre of the pic.)

And lastly - the two together:

and b] a selection of pieces of Aquarium Wood.

(The CD is there to show scale of the wood pieces - NOT part of the prize!!!) :-((

Many thanks go to Inza for the very kind - not to mention generous - offer of these fish and wood as prizes.

I think Inza's reason for offering the two Discus is that they are getting rather sidelined by his larger Discus and aren't doing as well as they might do otherwise.
As you can see from the pictures they are both healthy fish, which he assures me are feeding well so are healthy specimens.

I've copy-and-pasted the last bit of the previous Forum Post:

Now, if you'd like to send me your entries to this address:

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

we'll get the thing running.

Here's a link to the Rules...

www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php?optio...&id=33956&Itemid=200

Good luck everyone.

John

edit: This will be locked once the first entry arrives and no submissions will be published until after round 2 finishes at midnight this coming Sunday. It will be unlocked for comments after the voting has ended (as with previous Comps).

edit II: Right - Inza has decided that Round 3 will take the form of two (fairly) parallel comps - One (for the Discus fish) to be a round of Discus pictures and the other (for the wood) to be an 'anything goes' round (as long as it's fish-or fish-related).
Not unreasonably the Discus prize is to only be awarded to an existing Discus-keeper (or at least one who has provisions for such fish).
Entries will close on August 31 at midnight.

Very nice of Inza!

It goes without saying that if any other members have items around the place which they feel would make appropriate Competition Prizes then please offer them (by PM please).

is there a theme?

I'm not altogether certain yet - perhaps, since Inza donated the prizes it would be only fair that he suggests one (if he so desires).
Over to Inza.

Thanks guys,

I offer these prices as a thank you to all of you for helping me in the hobby and for the knowledge you give to one an other.

As i told John, my girlfriend offered me an other adult discus. This is the only reason i want these 2 to find a good home as i am afraid my tank will end up overcrowded. Most of my discus are adult or sub adult now and i think it would be better for the well being of those 2 small one to be away.
They are feeding well, are very active and healthy !

I think they should go to someone that have discus already or at least an appropriate tank for them. They are kept at 29*c and are feed 5 time a day. (2 times flake food, 2 times beef-heart and 1 time brine shrimp, bloodworm, tubifex, daphnia, depending the day ! )

So let's do a discus round for those ! (or at least tanks with the parameters and fishes that would suit discus).

As for the wood, i guess we should do an open round ! whatever you can snap could work !

Also i do leave in Bray, so if someone from Galway or else end up winning, be prepare for a small trip !

Thank you all, Inza.

And, as usual, it would be nice for everyone to vote !

OK then, no further offers have been received for August's Round (three) so we'll settle for Inza's very generous donation.
As previously mentioned, this round will be split into two sections: The Discus part will be for Discus pictures alone while the part of the round with the wood as prize will be our usual 'Fish-or-Fish-related' theme.
Obviously you will be more than welcome to enter into both - or either -section, bearing in mind the above caveat.

Just to reiterate Inza's own stipulation that the Discus will only be awarded to a member who will be able to provide appropriate accommodation for them - so, in preference an established Discus 'person'.

Entries, then, to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to, please, include your Forum user-name.

Good luck to all.

John

We have been very kindly offered a donation of young Angels from Miamiheat as prize in the non-Discus part of this month's competition.
Here is part of his email pertaining to the offer:

"Meant to write you before but following the example of Inza I can add 10 angelfish to the non-discus prize , they are "muts" but very pretty and go from 5-6 cm to 8-9cm. The catch is I need someone to hold them as I'd like to reduce bioload and i dont want to wait a month. I am in Dublin 8 near SH.
Photos are illustrative they may not be these exact same ones. Would probably try to put 5 black ones and 5 silvery ones. They look even better than the pictures"
.

Please note Miami's 'catch' - these fish will need to be looked after by someone until the round completes - any volunteers?
NB Please note that - as per the Rules the thread has now been locked so if anyone can help out in respect of holding the fish until the end of the month could they please either contact Miamiheat or myself via PM to arrange this.

EDIT:
Miami has now kindly told me that he will be able, after all, to hold his Angels until the round ends.

Since we now have two donations for the non-Discus section of this round it has been decided that the winner in this section will have their choice of either the Wood or the Angels so whoever's entry is placed second will be given whichever the winner doesn't want (does this make sense? - It does to me but there again I'm writing it, so I understand what I'm trying to say!!!)
