Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New round for November, 2015

Unfortunately, as a result of yesterday's stoppage, this is starting a day late.

However, as they say, 'Better late than never'...

As a result of requests from some members the new round starts today.

We have one definite prize donation of a co2 bottle from our good friend Homer - any further offers will be gratefully accepted.

There is no specific theme required so it's a case of 'anything goes' (with the usual proviso that your entries be either Fish, or Fish-related).

Up to three entries per competitor and entries will be accepted up to midnight on November 30.
Edit, It isn't in any way compulsory but it would help yours truly if all three entries were submitted together.

Here follows a copy-and-paste from previous rounds

Now, if you'd like to send me your entries to this address:

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

we'll get the thing running.

Here's a link to the Rules...

www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php?optio...&id=33956&Itemid=200

(Please take the time to read the Rules as some are quite relevant).

Good luck everyone.

John

This thread will be locked once the first entry arrives (as with previous Comps).

As well as Homer's prize donation another member (and good friend) of the Forum, Ger 310 has just made a donation of - well, here's his message: " I've a bag of 50 Catappa leaves here if you want them as some sort of prize for the photo comp.?.......They are Amy Lims leaves but they are her Premium Thai ones so they are in tip top condition".

I will just add that I've been using Amy's leaves for quite a lot of years and can vouch for them 100%.
I'm even tempted to send in an entry myself - these leaves really are the real deal.

Thanks Ger, and Homer, much appreciated.

Any more donations? - he asks very 'umbly, (as in Uriah Heep).

Seriously, though the more the merrier.

Hi john,
The rules link comes up with an out of date error message. Can you repost them again for us all?
Or is it just my iPad?
Thanks for setting this up.

That'll teach me to not be so lazy!

Copying-and-pasting brought up the wrong link (an old out-of-date one).
Anyway, I've (hopefully) remedied this now and you should be able to read Valerie's list of Competition Rules now. (Please let me know if you can't - the link works fine on my desktop PC so it ought to be OK now).

I'm a little uncertain yet as to which voting system we'll use yet, but that can be ironed out as the month progresses.

Thanks, Jon, for pointing out the error and thanks too for the thanks, but honestly, I do enjoy the Competitions too.

This is really excellent that you and the others are being so generous Alan, your offer is gratefully accepted.

I'm sure this will be very useful to one of the winners.

Thanks Tom,
It needs to be worked out how the prize contributions will be worked out, if we're planning to make this a monthly affair again it might be wise to hold over any donations for the following month, in other words we give the 1-2-3-4 places for November the prizes donated today. First place has his/her choice of the four, second has second choice, etc etc.

Since there will be up to three entries per member I feel it will be fairest that each winner gets only one of the placings (that sounds a bit clumsy, what I mean is that if someone gets their entry voted into top place then their other entries become void - that still sounds a little clumsy, but I hope you get what I'm waffling on about).

Maybe not void but skipped over to the next winning member ?
You can publish the results per photo then dish out the prizes per member.
You could end up giving the fourth prize to the tenth placed photo if its three entries per member

I agree, but it will still only be going to the fourth-placed competitor (always assuming we get that many members actually entering).

As with all previous rounds the thread is now locked and will remain so until the Round completes.

John

ps I just wanted to reiterate that - where Competition entries are concerned there is no need to reduce the file size of your entries (as is the case with publishing images directly onto the Forum) because Photobucket does that automatically during the upload process.
