Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anyone using them for water changes??....looking to get one due to water charges.
Ive got a 560L tank, so reckon ill need a butt that is over 300L.....anyone know where to get one at a good price (woodies only seem to do 200L max).
Is it necessary to use carbon filter for rain water??? Can you just stuff a carbon filter into the diverter filter????
Thanks in advance, Dave.

Dave,
It might be worth your while having a look at this thread, started recently by baan - it covers some of your points.

Here's a link to Ian Compton's views:

Also, check out some of anglecichlid's posts on rain water collecting and use.

And - here's what you would find if you typed rain water into the search facility (above):

Dave

I got my water butt from B&Q. I'm pretty sure it's 300L. I cant remember the price.

One thing... particularly during drier months (ha - you laugh!, In Ireland?!), you might be better with more water than you think you need. That's why I went with the 300L, even though I only have a 300L tank. My previous butt which split during the "big freeze" was a 200L and, while I didn't empty it, I came close a couple of times. With the volume, you might be better off (and potentially cheaper) going with 2 x 200L butts and linking them (i.e. one to the downpipe and then daisy chain them). The daisy chain should be easy enough to set up once you watch the levels in each butt.

As on the other thread, I'm not filtering. I thought about it, and I'm not going to. but I am closer to the Atlantic than you are ;)

I'm going back to rain water once the charges come in. Ive a 210 liter butt but also 4 x 25 liter plastic drums from seahorse so once all is full ill have over 300 liters to use. Also run it through carbon for 24hrs before use
