Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

There are allot more fish in the tank then can be seen in these pics, unfortunatly my Ornate bichir, Fire Eel and others decided not to show, these are two of the biggest fish I have, and I rarely see them!
Anyway the tanks 5 foot long, and holds nearly 400 litres, has 2 fluval 305's external and one fluval 4 plus internal, also an airpump for filtration. Lighting consists of 2 "original tropical" tubes with metal reflectors built into the hood.
Fish are GT, Pike cichlid, Fire eel, Ornate Bichir, Grey Bichir, Flowerhorn, Chocolate cichlid, Armoured catfish, Common Pleco. Average fish size is around 8"s
I also have an electric blue Jack dempsey, Snakehead, Delhezi Bichir, and Albino grey bicher growing on for this tank.

nice tank! and love the fish mix of fish!! how big is your Bichir senegalus? also what type of snakehead do you have..? i have a snakehead (Channa Gachua) in a 70L but i didnt think he would mix well with my fish in my 800L tank, all larger..
Thanks! Yeah it's an interesting mix alright, allot of thought and reading went into it, and allot of trial and error! The grey bichir is around 8 " and thin like a ropefish, I have an ornate in there thats around 12", and about twice the thickness of my thumb! but they don't bother each other, plenty of room for each. I have no idea what species of snakehead I have yet , it's only 2 " so it looks like allot of juveniles i've seen pics of on the web of various species. All I can say is it's pale and has 2 faint lateral stripes on it's side. Keeping an eye on it, first sign of it bothering my electric blue jd and it's back to the shop!

very nice healthy looking fish there, looking at yours make me miss the breeding pair of gt's i had a few yrs ago, any aggression with that mix??
Thanks man! I've tried allot of species with the GT to make sure it's peaceful. I think you have to choose one species you want to keep and build around it. In this case the GT, it's his tank and if any fish bothers him or gets bullied by him I bring it back to the shop. I've tried several catfish species, an oscar, black belt cichlid, red devil, salvini, satanoperca, severum, silver dollars to name a few, all we're of good size and all we're attacked, so I got them out of there. so it's very peaceful normally. Although I've recently added a chocolate cichlid and flowerhorn. So far the chocolates untouched and a keeper, the flowerhorn is being chased and some lip locking went on so he's probably gonna go. i'm not nearly done experimenting though!
Funny thing is the biggest trouble maker i've added was a 15" gibbiceps pleco! He was insanely aggressive nearly killed my gt and oscar! needless to say he's gone back to the shop.
One thing i've learned for sure, never add a cichlid thats bigger or equal to your dominant cichlid, and never add one that has simular colouration. Oh an GT's HATE wood catfish!

Hello jim wow I just read your thread and I'm very impressed with your mix of monster fishes and even having a silver arowana indeed one great tank. Is the Flowerhorn not bullying anyone? What's your ph levels now and nice flora too. I love them bichirs I had a good bunch before ornatopinnis, dhelhezi, senegalus, endlicheri and even a rope fish congrats well done
Thanks very much Ian! My PH is usually hovering around 6.7 which is fine for what I keep. Used to have a ropefish but unfortunately it was a poor specimen, unwell when I got it. I thought I could nurse it back to health but it died shortly after i got it. The Flowerhorn is the same size as the GT and male aswell. So far the FH is sticking to his cave and the area above it, comes out to feed. Whenever yhe GT and the FH get too close the GT chases the FH back to its cave but does not go in or actually hurt the FH, its all show so I am not sure if I will keep it yet have to see if it settles down. He's still showing some stress bars and darkened colours but it's only been a week. seems to be improving in mood by the day.
Lovely FH I hope I can keep it, has a golden head, salmon pink belly and white sides with strong trimaculatum spots.

Jim, could it be a female crenicichla geayi from Colombia???
BINGO! just looked at a few pics on google images and thats definatly it, Identical! Drew your a flippin Genius man thanks!
www.amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cic...geayi%20Goldspot.jpg Identical to my fish!
I don'y know how you did it man but well done, there are only 100's of different Crenicichla species! then theres the fact that males and females look different and that every specimen changes colours through different life stages even during the day they can change colour and you managed to get it.. very impressed!! Even the guys at monster fishkeepers couldnt get this one when I asked! Pat yourself on the back man!

No prob mate!!!! Ill have a good look tonight at the pic of the snakehead, does it have pelvic fins? it will narrow it down a bit!!! How long have you had him/has he grown much?
Just checked and yes he has tiny pelvic fins! Iv'e had him just over 2 weeks and he was less then half the size of My ebjd who is 4 inches, now he's as long. so from less then 2 inches to 4 inches in 2 weeks!!!Fastest growing fish i've ever seen.
