Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

We are very pleased to tell you that the very popular Photo Competition will be starting again and as we are well into the second half of February already this will run until March 31.

This first competition has very kindly been sponsored by Aquatic Village

The Rules are very few and are largely unchanged...but please - do stick to them.

So, get snapping.

Entries can be sent once the formal announcement is published on the Home Page, but in the meantime you can all polish up your Photographic skills.

John

We're now up and running with this - so you can send your entries any time from now. Let's celebrate the Competition return with a record-breaking amount of entries!

There has been a bit of a discrepancy with the Competition (But nothing to do with any entries already displayed).
Could everyone intending to enter a submission please carefully read the (very few) rules as they appear below before sending in an entry.
Thanks,
John

Just wondering if we ever had it in the rules to set the limit of number on entries per month? It struck me that that potentially voters may vote for 50 or so entries if ever that ever happens versus if we peg a limit lets say 20 entries or 25 then we set the limits and for making it easy for voters to make their pick.

It's nice to see them all, tho the admin of the comp could select a final cut for voting if an excessive amount of piccys are entered, concerned your good pick wil be forgotten by the end :o

Ian,
I think this might be an issue if as many entries arrive as you suggest, but in reality the entry numbers always seem to stick within reasonable amounts.
After all, a lot of entries would also infer that a lot of interested Forum members are participating - hence a larger potential amount of voters.
Looking back over the most recent competitions entry numbers have never become what you might call 'numerous' and obviously if numbers increase dramatically we can look into ways of limiting entries but at the end of the day this is really only a bit of fun (even though one or two people have taken it more seriously than others down the years).

Would be nice if we can have an Annual Winner or those voted monthly winners will enter the Annual event - could be part of the Fish Show program where not only forum members can vote but the general public can vote during the Show duration...it'll be nice to have prices from Digital Cameras to Fish Tanks to generate more interests.

Sorry Ian,
I overlooked replying to this earlier.

You are right, wouldn't it be nice to have such prizes to give out? We could have a great competition with prizes such as you mention, only one snag as I see it, who might donate such items to be offered as prizes?
We are just about managing to keep the monthly competition running thanks to the generosity of a few donors but, of course, it's nice to dream.

I am at least trying to plan a display of previous Photo Competition monthly winners (if I can get my printer to work again) to exhibit this year, which is something, I suppose.

you are right John. It does fair well for sponsors or even the new sponsors to
promote their shops by supporting the photo contests. They can definitely offer old stocks or something apart from cash vouchers
