Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a thought, is there anyone local to you who would be prepared to 'mind' your Fish for you while you are getting a replacement tank?
Sorry, I don't have anything as large as that spare or I would meet you half way down.
Can anyone 'down South' help?

is it just a crack or is it shattered? would a repair be possible? if it's not too bad you could silicone a piece of glass over the crack with aquarium silicone, would save you a good few quid.

Thanks John & Maggy I have them in another Tank,I know it sounds crazy to be upset by losing fish but I'm devastated...the crack is from front base to the back.I rang Hanleys but was informed if I siliconed a piece of glass to the base the volumn of water wouldnt hold...Just want to smack that guy on the head with a hammer, waited all day for him yesterday & when I rang from a private phone this morning he told me,'don't Lie,I know you beat the tank''..........

That's really good customer relations - I don't think!

I know what you mean about being devastated to lose your Fish, I would feel the same way.
And it's even worse when you've kept and cared for your Fish for any length of time, they are very easy to become attached to!

was it cracked when you bought it? or was the crack on your part? if it was cracked when you received it then yes you should be entitled to a replacement or your money back, but as it was bought from a classifieds ad site there isn't really much of a comeback unless you have a receipt unfortunately. i'd keep trying his number until you get an answer. very sorry to hear about your problems, but keep us posted as i'm sure someone here could help you out with a loan of a tank for a little while. chin up.

Thanks Wayne. The tank was up & running about 6months approx! I posted on here the night I bought it...was so excited & the posters were saying they created a monster as I had only started off with a smaller tank! Friday evening I was sitting watching my fish( as you do) when I heard a drip....then it started as 2 drips...then Panic stations..as it really started dripping fast...There was no one near it,so i don't know what caused it? when I finally had it emptyed all water & sand out (3am) I saw the crack.....:( Cried my eyes out!! oops...I rang the guy at 8.30 sat morning & he agreed to deliver one if I paid & I agreed..the rest is history!I know I have no comback because of where I bought it...but if he had any decency at all he would answer the phone.I am just sick inside I put so much work into it.Hubby & family asking is it worth all these tears Mum...yes! Yes! I love my fish.....would it be worth it to contact the Guards in Rosscommon as done deal advised? really dont want to go down that road though.

Very sorry to hear of your experience. I would be able to help, but am too far away I'm afraid.

As for contacting the Gards,I don't think there is anything they could do,as it's not a criminal matter, but a civil one. I only read this thread rather quickly, but it seems the guy has not done anything wrong,at least not in the eyes of the law. No harm in ringing them and asking for advice though.

What was the tank sitting on? Was there anything between it and the stand,ie polystyrene, etc?

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Dont get me wrong,I never said he did anything wrong or that it was his fault,he seemed a nice guy when I bought the tank from him,he advertises a 12 mth warranty with the tanks & when he informed me it only related to the seals I accepted that.its just we agreed a deal for a replacement tank,& he is the only one with a tank that size that I can afford & is available straight away. The tank is sitting in a unit (my own) for 6 mths without a bother.I'm not blaming him for anything...I just want the tank.

That's not unreasonable. In fact I think you have approached this in a much more 'reasoned' state than many (myself included) would have done in similar circumstances.
Did you get a chance to follow up the suggestion I made to you by PM?

Is this lad in Roscommon a professional tank builder?

I would think that if he is, this would make good advertising for him.
If you were to be able to tell everyone here that Mr Such and Such treated you fairly that would be good publicity. Plus we often get members asking do we know of anyone who can build tanks for them so this could - in the long run - bring him quite a lot of business.

well that was fair of him to offer the replacement, not many people would!!! if only you could contact him now. as it was asked before, was there anything under the base? it could have been a stress crack caused by the weight of the water, sand etc. hopefully you get sorted soon. keep an eye on the add sites you might be lucky to pick something up for a decent price and please god you won't let this experience put you off.

John I believe he is a professional tank builder going by the amount of glass in his back garden! Valerie the excess on my house insurance is 350 euro,so that's a no go....Maggy he did not offer a replacement. He offered to sell me a new tank for 199 eu,but I pleaded with him & got him down to 120eu which we both agreed on.I bought the original tank for 200 ,also bought a filter for 70 eu ,a table for 30 so he made a good sale. That's not counting what it cost on petrol going from Cork to Roscommon meal out, & one very irate husband when I took a wrong turn & got lost on the way home Its only 6mths old I really don't think I'm being unrerasonable...All I can afford is 120 & he is the only one that has the tank....

unfortunately the house insurance won't cover the aquarium itself, however they will assess any damage caused by the water leakage. zurich will not even quote for covering the actual tank, just a straight "no"

hope you get sorted tho

Probably a silly question here, but have you concluded why you are now losing fish?
Perhaps the tank is way too small for them now?
Or could there be another reason?
Presumably you used water from your leaking tank - and the filter?
I'm just wondering if there is something which can be done to stem the loss rate while you're getting the tank sorted.

I don't know John,I think they were just stressed being moved into a strange tank...I had built a structure from styrofoam & believe it or not they all had their own little places where they could hide..& it was really fun to watch.I have a second smaller tank on the go so that is where I put them all...just over crowded I think.. My parrot fish's head had black stripes after he was moved so I know he was stressed, but he seems to be back to normal now & pleased to report no more losses,Going to ring the guy again in the morning & hopefully he will take pity on me & sell me the tank, fingers crossed

Hi,
I'm questioning the wisdom of going down the road of shelling out more money to someone that supplied one that lasted six months. maybe its time to go to a reputable dealer?

Btw the line he gave you about only the seals being guaranteed is crap, as a consumer you are entitled to a reasonable life span for any product if you were not negligent in your use of the product, I wonder if a solicitors letter about small claims court would help him with his costumer services policy, also i doubt if he would like you mentioning that you were wondering if he is tax compliant see if this would put the frighteners on?

Unfortunately taraking has told us that she cannot afford a full-priced replacement and this really was her only hope.

Obviously your suggestion would be the safest route if the funds were available.

Good Morning! Spot on JohnH,my hubby is only on OAP so funds are limited, otherwise I wouldn't deal with the guy in Roscommon again.I took his word that it was only the seals were covered, was just so delighted he agreed to sell me same size tank for 120 when the full price was 199...Put on my grovelling shoes this morning & sent him a ''crawling text'' telling him I am so very sorry for all the phone calls & please please will he talk to me....then I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe his phone is off..so I used my house phone & he answered, pretended he couldn't hear me & hung up...Grrrrrrr..(Belt of a 2x4 I want to give him)
newbejkjimk I can't go to a solicitor as I have only his first name & no address...how blonde am i that i didn't keep it...never thought I'd need it again....

JohnH he is advertising all over done deal,Done deal wont give out any details address etc..which I understand to be honest..their take on it was to contact the Guards & they would give them the information, but as i said I don't want to go down that road & scare the life out of the man...if only he would talk to me,if only to tell me feck off..at least I'd know where I stand then.

I'm torn here....I don't know what to do...:( :(
