Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
I hate to mention this but...Water Metering!!!

Lord only knows how much we'll have to pay for it but you can bet your life it will be more than however much they promise it will be! (I think that's what they call a "politician's promise" ).
It might be good for them to find and stop all the leaks in the water supply line, there must be millions of gallons wasted daily!
I heard a rumour that they are trying to find a way to charge those of us with our own private water supplies too.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

It's called double jeopardy. gits.
That's one way to describe it, I mightn't be quite so polite if this weren't an "all ages" Forum.

This issue will affect each and every one of us!
Perhaps all the other Forum members are bankers???
(Who will easily be able to afford whatever charges are levied).

I'm shocked that everybody is so passive on this subject - 127 views and only two comments added!

To be fair its the top fatcats that are the ones who can afford it, the average worker is just as pissed as the rest of the country.

I am seriously considering reducing my number of tanks by at least half for two reasons, time and €800 ESB bills, now I have a third reason.
RO water is going to be more expensive but at least it should encourage creative thinking around the use of the "waste" water, I hardly ever used RO except for certain species tanks, but since the flood and freeze our water has increased from a constant pH of 7.0 to 7.6 to 8.0 and I need it now much more ofter to reduce pH for lots of my tanks, so now we are paying more for less. Why am I not surprised.

It is possible to feed a smaller RO unit with the waste water from a larger RO unit, and then another time if possible. I have seen this done in the UK. If you are savvy enough you can hugely minimize the amount of waste water... Although this means investing in more RO units.RO water is going to be more expensive but at least it should encourage creative thinking around the use of the "waste" water, I hardly ever used RO except for certain species tanks, but since the flood and freeze our water has increased from a constant pH of 7.0 to 7.6 to 8.0 and I need it now much more ofter to reduce pH for lots of my tanks, so now we are paying more for less.
