Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I would like to start a small hatchery so i could try my tetras on some live food.I have looked at the coke bottle with a air pump method and it looks like a sound job.I have read some articals on it but advice from people who have a hatcher up and running would be a great help.

I think i would try the bottle hatcher and see how i got on.If it takes around 40 hours for the eggs to hatch should you get a few more bottles going or when you take some shrimp out should you just add more eggs.

Hi Orca

I have never used the bottle method
But these hatchers are great they are the same temperature as the tank water and the shrimp swim out when they are ready (about 20 hours) I think I set mine up for 30 euro Including a large bag of eggs and a large bag of salt

In this pic you can see the shrimp swimming up the tube to the tank

If you use a bottle don’t use an air stone, just push the air tubing down to the cap of the bottle.

I have been thinking of trying to raise brine shrimp for a few weeks for my larger fish dose anyone know if this can be done?

that looks the real deal, with that in a breeding/fry/growing on tank they could almost take care of themsleves. The old plastic bottle and syringe to capture and feed BBS could work very well, though having a secure place to store it where it won't be knowcked over and is readily accessible is another, afraid the kids my get too curious and surely knock it over.

€40 is not a bad price for that hatcher from ebay.

I wouldn't pay 40 quid for it!
The hatchery comes to 16.70 euro
I would contact the seller and ask for a realistic shipping price
If there are a few of ye around Dublin ye could combine shipping and get them together.

As for how long they last, the instructions say you can use it for up to 10 uses and then clean it and refill, personally I use it for 3 days and then clean it out ready to start again you also get a double sided spoon with it

Day 1, 4 large spoons of salt wait 5 minutes for it to dissolve and add 5 small spoons of eggs

Day 2, 5 small spoons of eggs

Day 3, 5 small spoons of eggs

Day 4 clean it out

If you were to start with the coke bottle method and keep it working week in week out do you just keep adding eggs and clean once a week or would you keep 2 or 3 batches on the go.

I only have experience of my own hatcher but I would think keep 2 or 3 batches on the go if you need a constant supply ;)

Can you not clamp the bottle to the inside of your tank to keep the temp up and hatch the shrimp faster?

I like the idea of this , for feeding fry while at work, wonder if it is successfull though, I 'd still use my normal system too probably put a small amout of eggs in just to keep them ticking over. Astrid did you learn much from the reviews to sum up in a few words?

Fair play sourcing them at that price, I'll definetly put my name down for one to give it a try.

Cheers

Have to disagree with you on this LB.. any fish will take brineshrimp quite readily, i use mine on occasion in the tanganyikan tank and they go mad for them also discus, malawi's and community fish go ballistic with these. plus they are great for conditioning adults for breeding and as LB said for a constant supply of food for fry while people are at work
