Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
Wacky DIY marine setup
Some of the comments in the thread are really bad though, basically people more or less calling the guy an idiot, ow well, see what you make of it.

The stand looks pure crap and I somehow doubt it will take the weight of the tank once full. I have garden furniture that looks more stable.
And he loves his silicone judging by the amount he's using

he was thinking? By the looks of it walking upright might be a challenge.
I don't know much about marine set-ups but his DIY skills look like he lost his opposing thumbs. Most people would have done that with less than half the silicone.
Still can't get over that flimsy looking stand. Looks like he found a bit of 2*1 and and some pine shelving board in the shed and knocked it together with a couple of screws and expects it to hold the weight of the tank...

In fairness he has a vision, albeit somewhat left field from the rest of the world, and he is doggedly following that vision. I would like to see that system finished.
Now me, I'd take that money and go off and buy a Deltec aquarium, fully loaded in Porche silver please

BTW for those of you reading carefully through all EIGHT pages of the post waiting to see the finished product dont bother, I think he got fried when he plugged it in or found some good sense and stopped feeding the nay sayers. There is no final set up pics

I woul dlove to meet this guy in real life. The garage contents tells me he'd be an "interesting" character.

I would love to be there when he gives life to this monster.
Sitting back with my sunglasses on in my fireproof overalls sipping on a cocktail. OK Garrison, hit the switch..........

Can you just imagine how much work he has put into it!! Seems like he has put in at least half a years work in setting it up..
It may not be the nicest contraption that anyone could do but it sure is informative, at least he takes good pictures if anyone else wanted to do something like it!!
After doing a full day of study...this is a nice way to spend the evening!!

But ya got to love his bikes!! They are amazing!!

OK Garrison, hit the switch..........
I really did laugh out loud at that one! Well done!
As for the tank, he spent more money on plugs and sockets then I did for my Rio 180 tank and stand.
Lead me not into temptation, For I can find it myself!

Reminds me of a post on another forum the other day were someone
had a sick dwarf Gourami. They must have spent about €20 on meds trying to cure a €6 fish and were wondering what other meds the could try. I said nothing as we all did it.

Are there any statistics out there how many people get killed every year do aquarium DIY jobs. Judging by some of the posts all our life insurances might go up if the insurance companies ever cop on.

Reminds me of my early days with the Gourami Iridovirus. I eventually took your advice and bought a shovel.

Ken.

Ken.
