Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I hate filters, the ugly wiring, the fact that you can see that they're there. Now I know you can make all sorts of filters for outside your tank but even they show pipes and they require space!!!!
My tank.
20 liter
Blue/green/purple male Siamese fighter
Built in over head

I used to use the over head in conjunction with my mechanical filter, the outflow would be sent up to the over head, mainly because I love the waterfall effect.

My Idea:

The twist, the pipes will be disguised as a tree!

Nice idea, internal filters always looks ugly and take space no matter the tank size but with small tanks its bigger issue.

U can get glass pipes but they cost money but u can still see them and the cleaning is not always easy.

Post photos or video once u get it working.

Tom

I will. My sealant should be here next week. I just have to hope that my aerator is powerful enough.
I have the clay in the oven (i'm coating all of it with sealant after colouring) so it' more workable.
The branches will have mini flower pots for plants to add greenery.
I just have to decide whether or not to have it so you can take it apart as it is essentially just the pipe and air.
Fingers crossed on this. I'll keep you updated . The piping on this will be difficult to clean unless I can come up with a way to hold it together without them being sealed.
If this works, I might make one for my 50 liter.
Thank you for your interest

Nice idea ChelseaSplendon95.
Had something similar done in a tank before.
Wrapped mesh around pvc piping and wove java moss in and out of the mesh.
After a few months I had a moss pillar in my tank with no plastic or piping to be seen.

Thank you. It's either going to be amazing or just the result of another bipolar episode. Fingers crossed it's the first :D

Simple system will work very well. It's the same system they use for oil drilling in deep water by pumping extremely high pressure air deep into the oil lakes under the sea bed to force the oil to the surface.

Sounds like a really clever, creative idea. If it doesn't work as well as you hope, don't give up on it. Just try again. For me, I learn as much from my DIY cock-ups as I do about my successes.

this fishkeeping hobby is a massive learning experience, and if one doesn't try something new you will never know weather it would have worked or not

It definitely is but I was a horse rider before a fish keeper and I believe that it laid down all the foundations because it's waaay more expensive than little set ups. I taught my horse to pull a cart before I owned said cart or even a harness.
I think we all learn best from our mistakes.

I'm just hoping I won't mess such a simple system up Paulv

My clay is in the oven to harden it up so I can add the details! Then I just have to wait for my sealant to arrive :D

The hose pipe keeps cracking a section of my clay. I shall have to rethink that bit. I'll post photos of the build so far! and for now, it's a waiting game, sealant should be here by Friday!!!

You could incorporate some fiberglass into the clay when you model the tree, that way it will be stronger and won't crack. That means starting over. I don't think your oven is baking it hard enough.

my reply disappeared O.o
I'm using air drying clay, I've been putting it in the oven to allow it to get to get to the stage where I can work with it. :)
If the prototype works, I might make it again using plaster bandage, wire and clay.

I was thinking that to allow the hose to remain flexible, I'll make a mesh shaped like a tree top and plant java moss.
