Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

corner tanks and goldfish (newbie)

Hi

having read a bunch of stuff on-line, the general view is that my 60l aqua start 500 is not the most suitable home for 2 goldfish and the best shape is rectangular and not too deep, although the guys do not seem to have any oxygen issues, no signs of hanging out around the filter all the time.

unfortunately space will be an issue if/when I decide to upgrade, so the question is.

How do people in the know feel about corner tanks? these look like they may provide larger capacity while needing less real estate. But should I be concerned about surface area?

On a related note, are second hand tanks a viable option?

Thanks

Hello and welcome. In answer to your question, my 2 pennies worth, 60l is probably ok for 2x2in goldfish but not for 2x6in fish. Goldfish are active fish and need space to swim, also they are fairly 'dirty' and need good filtration and regular water changes. If they had 'oxygen issues', they would'nt be hanging around the filter, they would be gasping at the surface.

Corner tanks are fine providing (like any tank), they're not overstocked and are properly filtered.

Second hand tanks are an extremely viable option in these austere times and there are some genuine bargains out there. As with any second hand market, 'let the buyer beware' and if you're not 100% happy walk away there will be another one along. Hope this helps :)

Personally I love corner tanks, have a trigon 350 with blue and gold rams. ( I do keep other fish besides mbuna and native marines!)
Not recommended for mbuna, not so big a distance between territories! If you go for one, remember to use a deeper substrate towards the back, it cuts out the sloping away effect. If you like the idea of one, go for it.

Thanks for the info.

I am suffering from too much information and not enough knowledge. The Internet can be a dangerous place.

I am hoping the goldies can get to 6" if they get near it they may find a home in a neighbour's pond.

I read somewhere to watch out for the fish spending alot of time around the fiter outlet as the water would be more oxygen rich here. I think the spray bar is doing the trick and I will keep an eye out for gasping and fast gills.

Thanks again

Hi Dec, welcome to the forum.

I tried to get a corner tank for along time , same as you i was stuck for space. the juwel trigon 190 i found was a very good option. It takes up very little room and with the cabinet underneath it keeps everything nice and tidy.I found a shop in cork city to be the cheapest around for this particular tank. You can spend weeks trying to look at all the advert sites.By the time you find a suitable tank, drive to collect it and clean it up you'll probably be after spending more than what a new one would cost.As the lads said gold fish are quite dirty fish, so good filtration ,regular cleaning and maintenance of the tank are a must.Pm me if you want to know the price of the trigon190 in cork(as they are not a site sponsor).

Cheers Stuart.

Hi Stuart

Thanks I'll be sure to get on to you when it is upgrade time. My filter box says it is good for up to 75l my current plan is test every second day and weekly gravel clean/10ish litre change. hopefully weekly tests will be ok after everything settles down and if levels stay pretty constant.

Please feel free to advise if I am making mistakes, I'm pretty sure I have made most of them already but willing to learn.

Thx
