Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

HI I was in whackers at the weekend and saw Caelean Worms..

Never saw them before and I must have the spelling wrong bacause when I google it i dont get anything. I searched pfk as I was told about an article they did but didnt get anywhere.

They are fairly big black eel looking worms that appear to be scavangers and wriggle a lot and tie themselves in knots.

does anyone know anything about these creatures.

Hi Goldy, they (caecilian worms) are amphibians from tropical jungles in south america, africa etc living in leaf litter feeding on insects, some can get very big!!!! 5-6ft!!!!! Never kept them. interesting creatures though!

I posted a reply a few minutes ago, but it never made it :(

Here is a site with a lot of details on keeping them. Interesting creatures, but don't add them to a tank with small or even not so small fish!!

@ daragh thanks for that. I thought they might have been a nice addition but I think not now. Especially as they live up to 20 years. Nothing would be safe in the tank with them. Oh well I thought they were nice but wolf in sheeps clothing springs to mind.

@serratus are there any other kinds of eels/worms that are nice in temperatment and would be happy in a sub-tropical set up. By that I mean heated to about 20c in the winter

thanks for the reply

Hi Nessa, as far as im aware most, if not all eels are predatory in one way or another, but if i come across any ill let you know, maybe you could try a few of the eel-like loaches?????

Or maybe you could get a native eel like the one at the show, he had lived with small fish for years without bothering them, which was pretty surprising, I don't think that would be standard behaviour.

thanks to you both. I already have some weather loach but I might put some more in also. I thought the eel at the show was amazing and have got a cap and a net sorted for my next expedition to teh park. I have seen some in the river there. Hope the parkies dont see me.

:cheer: Don't fall in and make sure you don't introduce any nasties into your tank! I got a copy of Aqualog News yesterday and there is an article on those worms, they are coming at me from everywhere, I had not heard of them a couple of days ago! Interesting read, I will bring it to the meeting on Tuesday.
