Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Only recently added two fish to what was an otherwise healthy tank. I bought the 2 fish from seperate LFS within days so not sure which was diseased and I guess my own lack of quarantine is as much to blame for the outbreak.

Without the 'prevention is better than cure' argument, could anyone advise what is the best treatment for marine Ich?

I only have one marine tank with about 8 fish, 6 snails, 3 hermit crabs, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 urchin, a starfish and some live rock...

I need to treat the whole tank as I can't aford to set up a hospital tank.

Esha Oodinex, as suggested, is a great product and its invert safe too.
However, IME, the only 100% cure is fresh water baths.
You make up fresh water, same temp and ph, and put the fish in it for a length of time.
'How long' is a piece of string.
Until the fish tries to jump out or seems stressed.
Or up to a max of 10 minutes.
Either way the white spots will start to drop off the fish instantly. This is so effective you may not even need to dose the tank.

i 100% agree. a freshwater dip is best the parasite will die with the shock of no salt.although can be quite hard to catch fish and espscially if there is more than 2-3 fish infected.the process of being caught and treated can be v stressful for your fish and yourself.

Drop salinity will stop spread and uv or ozone can help
And spores live up to 6 months in tank
Don't suppose these new fish hadn't been fully adjusted in pet store

Wait until you see the green gunk that your protein skimmer will take out

You will not really see any difference the first day or so, needs the full 3 days.

Are you running a UV? Well worth the investment...

As already mentioned the spores live in the tank for 6 months so even when the fish clear up, they can be re-infected, especially new fish are added to the tank.

I have found running a U.V and feeding the fish foods with added Garlic helps if its a small outbreak after the treatment. Some think this is an old wives tale and some think its wrong to feed them something that isn’t natural to the fish's diet, but it worked for me.
