Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Setting up a 120l FOWLR.. was created by Druid (Druid)
Slowly starting this process, the FW has been stripped down and my beloved L number plecs are gone. DSB is in place and the tank is delightfully murky/foamy (All normal and the HOT magnum and water changes will sort it, apparently). Now looking for a detrivore kit and pricing up LR in various places....

I'll update as it moves along.

LR - probably about 15lbs at first as it's sooooo bloody expensive here, I have more arriving next month from New Orleans, USA to bring it up to about 25lbs :)

Just won a protein skimmer on ebay for the princely sum of 15 including postage..not too shabby ;)

Hmmm, Deltec something or other. Can't remember what but the guy selling it obviously had no idea what it was as the listing literally said "Marine protein skimmer. Used in good working order." just that and a pic!

A skimmer for 15 quid, thats excellent value!

Oh and I was going to say that you needed one to get rid of the protein scum. I take it that you didn't wash the LR prior to installing it?

(I didn't bother either, fancied it to get the cycle going)

Or did you forget to rince the sand?

Any pics? Dying to see this....

I started of with a FOWLR, but ended up going reef a few months later ;)

I did rinse the sand - the "glow" was suspended particles from adding water and then a little LR dieoff.

Cycle is finished (ammoina-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-5ppm)

The tank yesterday after adding another couple of kilos of LR, hence the slight cloudyness! (was taking advantage of Aquatic villages €18 per kilo offer!) - LR is cured so there should be very little die off. I've got another 10lb of LR arriving next week from New Orleans plus i plan to get a few mushroom corals and some Caulerpa on rocks to finsih the aquascaping. I'm planning to add 4x hermits, 2x turbo snails and 4x cerith snails this week from Fish Antics. Eventually I'm hoping to stock it with a TMC onyx ocellaris clown, a royal gramma, a clown goby and possibly a pair of bangaii cardinals. Coral wise as we're doing "low light" I'll be limited to mushrooms, zooanthids, sun polyps and possibly candy cane.

To add...the deltec skimmer went back on ebay due to size issues...so now I have an aqua medic miniflotor as seen front left of the tank.

I would leave the sun polyps (tubastrea faulkneri) for the moment.
you may find it hard to feed with all the fishtaking the food.
Even with no fish in the same tank they need special attention.
If you do decide to get one i suggest direct feeding each polyp with brine shrimp or krill. Also some cyclopse added to the water.

Is that a standare air stone in your skimmer?

Looks good so far, how much was the shelf rock? Around here it goes for around $15.00 a pound. Way too expensive at the time I wanted to buy some, especially when the fiji was going for $5.00 a pound.

The rock was €18.99 a kg...basically pick and mix and is Premium Fiji

Sun polyps - I knwo they need target feeding etc., thanks though..they will be a "later" addition

Airstone - it was..just while I was waiting for my limewood oen to arrive...but my blooming air pump has packed in so that needs replacing (was a cast off from an old tank) before the skimmer will be of any use!

A free hot magnum, you cant get cheeper than that. :D
Just looking at your picture again i noticed that you have all the skimmer submersed.
The removable cup should be above the water line. You probably already now this.
