Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i have been having a hard time recently trying to keep my electric bills down,
at the min i am running 2 tanks 450ltr with 300w heater, fx5,2xt8's usually only have 1 on,
84ltr, internal filter, 100w heater,

my last bill was near 200euro, i one before was 260euro for 2 months.
seems high since i live on my own in 2 bedroom house, i dont be using washing machine that often or never use dishwasher and dont leave things on stand by..

so was wondering what other people think about there electric bills if they are high or have found a big rise or fall in there bills due to adding new tank or equipment or by getting rid of some..

let us know your experiances..

thanks
steve

Something wrong there, that's waaaaay to high. Get a monitor from maplin or some other electrical store, you can work out what the cost of the aquarium is etc by working out price per watt and wattage used.

We are a couple living in a 3 bed,30yr old house with single glazed, banjaxed aluminium windows,we have a very old unserviced oil burner, and no insulation, all, well most, being quoted at moment, and work done this autumn. My tanks are in the house, and the concrete un-insulated shed, and we pay €80 a month on Airtricity. I regularly update the reading, and submit it. Last Winter I ran half a dozen 2ft semi-insulated tanks out in shed, and a few tanks in house, ranging from 125-180ltrs. We are very careful on leaving lights on,oven is always off AT WALL,when not used,no standbys on tv,dvd,cd,etc, although I don't trust manufacturers on that. Phones are charged at work and in car, laptops are run on mains only, never battery(prolongs battery life),and you should see me when staying in hotels,al cameras, etc are charged there, yep, tight git!!
As\INsay,only €80 a month.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I live in a one-bed apt. in town. SFA in the lines of insulation- FF were never good on leglislating for the consumer, if it cost the developer.
Due to the fact that the hot tank is directly below the cold tank in the hall and the main "ventilation" feds into the plenum above this, windows have to be constantly open to discourage mould. (this before fish tanks added!!)

In summer, esb= €160/2 months. Without the 2(3 with hospital) tanks, this might reduce by about €45.

During the cold snap the last 2 years, dec/jan esb= €380
This jump relates to heating only! Everyting else is the same.

That seems way too high. My current ESB bill to Aug 25th is €113. My gas / electricity for the year Nov '10 to Aug '11 is €1,341 and the wife loves her heat. You should definitely check that out. With ESB prices going up you are looking at another €250. on your bill
