Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Pressurised CO2 gas cylinders

Hiya

Does anybody know where i could get pressurised co2 gas cylinders other than BOC gases, they charge a monthly rent on the cylinders, it adds up to over 100 euro per year, there is another place that i know of but they (Air services, airton Rd Tallaght, I think) also charge the monthly rent, you also have to pay for refills on top of the rental fee so it works out very expensive.

Somebody will probably say pubs etc but i was really looking for an independent source that i would just pay a deposit on the cylinder and get refills when ever i wanted, and pay for the refill off course.

I know people with marine tanks also use co2 for calcuim reactors so maybe somebody out there might have some ideas or point me in the right direction.

Thanks

why dont you use the proper aquatic stuff, JBL make exellent Co2 products aswell as a few other companies, top of the range. Complete with connections, guages etc. There serious pieces of kit and can be expensive initially but there an alternative to your current situation.

Hiya Dave

Yeah im aware of the co2 kits, the problem is the cylinders are too small at 500 grams and the refills are very expensive for what you get, for the tank im running now the 500g cylinder would last at most 2 months and that would be at a low bubble rate, i really need the ability to crank the co2 up when i need too and this requires using more gas, so basically the cylinder would run out quicker than the 2 months and at about 20 euro per refill this is not a cheap option either (about 120 Euro per year) and thats only on a 40 gallon tank, i want to get a larger 75 gallon tank and this will also require co2, and for this tank the 500 gram cylinders are not really an option at 20 euro each so i need a different solution.

The problem with the kits as well are that the regulators on them will only fit the cylinders they are sold with, they will not fit normal industrial co2 cylinders.

The cost of refilling a 5 kilo industrial co2 cylinder is about 25euro, so quite a difference in price with a 500 gram cylinder that costs nearly 20euro.

I dont blame the lfs thats how much they are in the UK as well.

I would have no problem buying the co2 kits if the refills were not so expensive, and running 3 tanks (15, 40, 75 US gallon) will require quite a bit of co2.

And who said this was a cheap hobby eh :D

So If anybody has any ideas id love to hear them.........please post them here.

These are all highlight planted tanks btw.

Thanks for the reply Dave 8)

Zig,

I used Aquatic CO2 kits with the clydinders that come with them.

BOC or Airton will charge you for refilling but if you get friendly with a fire extingushier company, they can refill the CO2 cylinders.
And most of them won't ask for anything or maybe just a few quid.

Darragh

Thanks Darragh, yes fire extinguisher suppliers were going to be my next line of inquery as it were, i was thinking more along the lines of auctually buying a co2 fire extinguisher (grey coloured instead of red i think) i think they hold about 5 kilos and will definatly work with a normal co2 regulator, if they have the handle on the top you just use a cable tie to keep the handle in the "on" position the idea was to get them to then either swop or refill them for me, not sure how this would but i guess its worth a try, your probably right though if you get friendly with them they would probably help you out.

I auctually have a full Heineken pub co2 cylinder atm which a friend of mine got from someone who works there, but as luck would have it the thread size they use will not fit an ordinary co2 regulator..........typical.......i think now that you have mentioned it i will definatly check out some fire extinguisher suppliers it was allready on my mind as an idea

Cheers Darragh thanks for the reply

btw nice to see a few people auctually using the site here lately.
