Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi does anyone have any info on red dwarf crayfish? I looking to add maybe 2 of them to my community tank. I googled but didn't find much on them. I'm just looking for the likes of water stats, general care info and compatibility.
I have moderately planted 120l tank with a breeding pair of Angels, 2 Clown Loach, 5 Cory (diff species), 2 small plecos (L183) and 1 Leopard Gourami.
Thanks, Joe.

Probably you mean Mexican Dwarf Crayfish "Orange" - Cambarellus patzcuarense. Lovely fish tank mates, peaceful and undemanding.
There is olso brown colour version - Schoco.

Orange and Schoco can cross breed so do not mix them. As far as I know they reach 4 cm but mine aren't so big. Texanus is smaller than Orange but shouldn't be kept together as Orange or Schoco can be dangerous for them. I would only recommend to keep them with small fish in order not to become a tasty snack for a bigger fish... :) Generally, they are sold when reach 1 or 1.5 cm.

If you want to keep just 2 of them you should have only females (all girls sociaty :)) as boys are real sexocholics  (Hope not to be band for this remark :) )

Thanks Katherine, Im thinking of leaving these for now. I think my male Angel fish would make a quick snack of them and the Leopard Gourami has recently eaten a neon tetra that I had so I dont think a little Crayfish would last too long ha ha. I have also heard that it is illeagal to import crayfish into Ireland even though some fishshops sell them. Dont know how they can sell them if this is the case?

Hi wastegate

There are a good few different species of crayfish in different sizes and colours, the CPO would be one of the smallest ones(3-4cm) so caution have to be taken when choosing tankmates, a species only tank would be probably the best option. In my experience they do not seem to be too fussy about water parameters as long as the tank is cycled.
Some videos from a little while back

I think that you will be able to keep them in a comunity tank with small fish as they are pretty tough.

Well Des, probably you won't get them in any shop but as I mentioned my boys are always 'in action' so it's only a question of time... :)

Hi Katherine

If I could get some of them from You at some stage, that would be great, I have a good few different types of Inverts at the moment, all breeding like mad, let Me know how things progress and We can do a bit of trading....

cheers
