Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Most of shrimp are not difficult to keep and breed but are more sensitive to chemicals and heavy metals than fishes.
You can set up a tank and let it run for 6-8 weeks before adding the shrimp if you use a new filter.
If you buy plants from a lfs make sure to leave it in a bucket of water and changing the water often, the pesticites used on them are lethal to shrimp.

hi , just seen your post , think I have just made my first mistake ,probally the first of many, I purchased a aquael shrimp set 30 litre from newlands this morning,I have it set up on my desk , it comes with a small internal power filter with a sponge on it ,a heater preset to 24 degrees and led light . I now have it set up with black sand and plants in it plus a nice colourful rock . I have treated water with a declorinater and added a plant fertilizer . I was told that you don't really cycle a shrimp tank and that I could add a few shrimp after 48 hrs . would be grateful for some advise on this please .thanks

I,m keeping red cherries and orange sakura in a community tank with a shoal of large Denison barbs ( thanks again Dave )and they breed like mad.Theres a pile of some type of plant that can grow in the substrate but I have it as a floating mass on the water surface and it grows like mad and that's where the shrimp colony live and breed.I have orange, deep red, lighter coloured and clear shrimp so I,m thinking that there cross breeding, their not being fed any type of shrimp food as feeding the barbs etc tetra prima and flake and you can see them feeding off the plants ...

I would go with Red Cherries at first as they are cheap and cheerful......I had a small tank of Red Cherries that were entertaining me for about a week or two but I then got seriously bored with them and the tank was shut down within 5-6 months!! ........they bred like crazy and that's the only reason I kept them that long as I did as they became free food for some of my other tanks!!

I know lads that just keep Shrimp exclusively and love them but from my own experience I wouldn't be splashing out much at first just in case they are not for you!!

Miamiheat used to have a tank of red cherries, dont know if he still does. Lauris has some sakuras.
Sould be pretty easy to find as they are really prolific.
Otherwise any lfs usually have them.

Never had to deal with this problem because i cycle my tanks
If you have another tank with the same parameters, clean the mature filter in a bucket of tank water and run the new one in it for 2-3 hours and put it back in the new tank.
You gonna have to do some big water changes regurarely.
I dont know much about prime but apparently it neutralises ammonia if i remenber it correctly...

Hi Anthony , I would normally cycle a tank or pond before adding fish, but was told by two different sponsors that you don't have to cycle a shrimp tank because there bio load is so small, I might add that their are only about a dozen shrimps in it some of which are very small. So the lesson learnt is every tank must be cycled. To date what I have done is on Sunday 15% water Change and added a starter dose of cycle , today I did another 15% water Change and added a day 2 dose of cycle. I don't like doing constant daily water changes because I think it causes to much stress on the shrimps but don't think I have much choice . I would really like your views on this as I believe you are a dab hand with shrimps . How hardy are red cherries stress wise and will they tolerate high ammonia levels. Thank you

Red cherries are very hardy. I honestly dont know if shrimp are sensitive to ammonia or nitrite but they are definetly sensitive to high nitrate. I personnally try to keep the nitrates below 20 and depending on species below 10.
High nitrates wont necessary kill the shrimp but it definatly stress them and they become more vulnerable to fungal and bacterial infections due to a weaken immune system, i learnt it the hard way :(
Regarding water changes, if there is a problem in one of my tanks, i do not hesitate to change 50 % of the water even with the most sensitive shrimp, i personnaly use an airlines when i do water changes.

Kind of thought that, might try and squeeze one of the prefilters in the e1501 on the tropical into the shrimp tank in an effort to get a bit of bacteria into it . Thanks for the advise
