Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

They will develop an area just behind the Head called the Saddle, this is a brownish-orange colour.

Those guys are prolific, I had decomissioned a tank but lweft water in it. 2 months later I fished out about 15 shrimp.

I had 7 or 8 left when I came home from holiday. and in the 6 months after that it went from 8 to about 500+

If they are left to it and have plenty of food, the multiply quite quickly, pretty sure I gave you ones with saddles developed.

They have an impressive tollerance when conditions change slowly

bang on Kev and cheers mark i definitely have atleast one, but due to the small gene pool should i invest in some more before deformities kick in, i don't want a load of mad things flying around the tank running into walls and lobbing themselves out of the tank and such

right so how do they go about the deed, she lays eggs and the male fertilizes them? or do they get up to no good and she lays them already fertilized

ok as i didn't want to clog up the posts with a new thread i'l ask on this one

when cherries lay there eggs do they come from a pouch underneath?

i think i just witnessed a hatch opening, eggs coming out and to crush my excitement she went and ate them as they came out,
is this a sign of things not right?
high ph maybe?
a lack of males to fertalize? (they all look the same to me)
a bad batch?
or just the norm?

there is three of them at it

if they are all red then you have no males.

males are fairly transparent with a few red spots and stripes as opposed to the very red females. males are smaller and skinnier too.

Having had 100s I can say they are both red, the male a depper red, they only lose colour when they ditch the shells, I thought that was a grade of crystal Kev, mine never looked like that.

Derek is right, the females are larger and much more colorful whilst the males are clear with red spots and are a lot smaller.

Coolio, was not sure, was genuinely a question by me.

I had many many adults and all were defo red, maybe it was the males that were the lighter as Jay said. SO I got it backwards:)

If ye are doing a gravel vac,let the dirt settle in yer dish and then shine a torch around the water in the dish, you'd be amazed how many will be in there.

Sweet! They are amazing little animals. I got some a couple of months ago, kept them in a small tank for about a week and then moved them on to another tank. I was breaking down the original tank they were in a couple of weeks after that and I found bajillions of shrimplets!
You cannot get enough moss and catappa leaves... its like viagra for shrimps!

i absolutely feel your pain

i have millions (some courtesy of mark :) ) and they are now in 2 different tanks AND a sump only trouble i am having is getting them big for feeding (sorry but i have a tank full for ornimental pleasure, and another for food - my severum and puffer go nuts for em)

when i vac the tanks i find 100's of these in the bottom, along with 1mm assasin and trumpet snails. real pain getting all the shrimp out the muck and yes i will spend the hours at it as i dont want any of them going to waste

i thought they were red cherry's, the female is larger and redder and either has eggs or a saddle constantly and they have bred with the others i got from xeon in seahorse. they are pale in breeding tank but uber-red in planted tank

i usually let the bucket settle, pour off most the top and go thru the bottom muck by scooping some out with a clear jug, look is anything moving like its alive, remove it and pour out rest. would be simple if i didn't have them in so many tanks and so much water
