Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Crayfish diet? was created by Alex (Alex)
Just wondering could i feed a crayfish prawn shells.. Would the shells contain calcium and nutrients?? I buy prawns for my fire Eel so i could get shelled ones.

Also would a crayfish eat Egg shells? should be a good source of calcium...

Thanks.

it would do no harm to throw a whole one in and see, i'd say it would leave the shell, but it would be interesting to watch it (video it....please)

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

I could be wrong (again) but I was told they are good at eating snails, if they will eat the shells too that would be your food source with built-in calcium.

Certainly looks like it would polish off snails alright.

Yeah my old crayfish loved MTS.... Sadly my assassins ate all my MTS. I put in a good few pond snails for the crayfish.

At the moment i have two crayfish in the tank.... It's around a 85 liter tank. Iv never kept two in the same tank. At the moment they get on fine as they are only small, How aggressive are they towards each other when they are bigger? I have an empty 70L tank just in case.

they are fairly intolerant of conspisifics at any age really, particularly over food. If the they have plenty of hiding spaces though you should be grand. I'm pretty sure they won't eat eggshells.nice specimen btw.

dont make me come over there.

A mate of mine had 2 crayfish which started of the same size as yours in a 450 litre tank. Ater a year they got massive and lived at different ends of the tank and when feeding time happened they would appear and charge at each other and fight until one day the claw got ripped off one of them. His kids started callin him one claw. He went missing for a few weeks and then started the battle again with 2 claws as he had grown it back. Me mate eventually had to move the cray fish as they started turning on the fish as their appetite was not being met. But is was a savage to look at when they sparred up at feeding time, but they ended up costing him a fortune as a lot of nice and pricey fish were on the crayfishes menu. Good luck with them Alex, keep an eye on them though, get some vids up there...:)

I'm just after popping in some zucchini and the two of them started fighting over it ha! Its more intimidation than actual fighting...The Tank as tons of caves and they usually stay at opposite sides.. I will move them to separate tanks when they are big enough to actually do damage. Here is a pic of the tank! I added tons of anacharis today for them to snack on.
