Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just have a look at this link www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/1288...cobalt-blue-lobster/ (I hope I don't do anything against our forum rulles) - I would think it over - your tank can be too small for it soon... But crayfish are cool!!

This is the scientific name to avoid confusion 'Procambarus alleni'.

My guy is about 5" now and i keep him in a 70L (I think its a 70L.. found it in a skip).... they dont really need a large tank, just a big cave.

Hope, you won't feel ofended when I disagree with your opinion. I read an article (cannot find a link) where it was clearly stated that 150 l of aquqrium capacity should be booked for a single lobster to let them have comfort and sufficient territory.

I saw 2 adult and 3 young Australian lobsters in a Dora tank (20 l). Does it mean it was good for them?

Gerry, if you are going to put him into bigger tank later, That's OK.

Here he is....

Few years back i had a crayfish in my 800L... he just jammed himself in a little cave and only came out for food... I dont think they really need that much space...

Sure i might change my mind once a have a big 7" one on my hands....

I have a sponge filter and a pump going behind the rocks....

Ummm no... Multiple crays in a 20L isnt good.

Most internet sources say 70-100L as min tank size. 2 years ago i kept a 6" cray in my 70L... and i also had one few years before that...

Mine didnt eat carrot either...:)

Mine ate sweet corn, tomato, cucumber and zucchini so far..

The common names for Procambarus alleni are 'electric blue crayfish', 'cobalt blue lobster' and 'Florida crayfish'...

They can be pure blue (selective breeding)... or if they are wild caught a mixture of blue/red/ brown like mine...
My cray is actually quite blue under proper light...
daylight! he is fairly blue with bits of red/brown

As far as i know all other crays are illegal....

Oh, it is quite suprise to see Australia blue lobster here, bcz I think it is kind of illegale to import lobster from Australia, but it is a cool one to keep.
as my experience before, you can give any food to them, from veg to meat without fat. carrot is good, also food which is rich of iron is good for them to show colour, such as liver or spinach. all lobster's body is full of protein, so food should be contain decent protein.
they can live in low oxygen, medium NO3 and low temp around 16, but better condition will bring their colour out, keep an eye on GH and PH, if my memery still right, I think they prefer PH around 7.5.
hope it helps:lol:
