Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Mark, firstly I dont think you will have much success with this muscle. Firstly they just do not do well in aquariums and esp in a tank such as Fluval Chi tank.
Muscles are filter feeders,I cant see how they are going to survive in an aquarium unless target fed,and in a tank that size its gonna pollute your water pretty quickly. Secondly, they often perfer cooler waters.
Ive seen people purchase these and have yet to hear of anyone have long term success in any aquarium. They simply die of hunger, they wont survive on algae and there wont be enough for them to get in any tank in my opinion.

Id return the muscle if I was you, it has real potential to wipe out the rest of the tank inhabitants,as when it dies it will foul the water very quickly. Also they like to dig into the substrate and just looking at the size of that muscle it wont be able to do that.

Sorry for the rather bleak outlook re the muscle,if I was you Id return it to the shop and not risk the rest of the tank getting wiped from a dead muscle decaying unknown to you some night.

Be careful how it is disposed of, if it's a non-native.
I believe it's illegal to import live ones, due to on-going habitat destruction.

it'd do nicely as food for a big puffer like fahaka or mbu which is usually why they are available.

Give it back to the Store, shame that it spent it's life getting to that size to be fed to another animal or to die in the Tank, and believe me, when they go it's one stinking mess, they turn into the foulest smelling goo you will ever experience.

It should close when touched, and again it should open naturally as well.
It will probably be ok for the time being, its a shame that these muscles are sold in fish shops as I really feel they have almost no chance of surviving in a closed tank where they ideally need flowing waters such as that in the wild which is full of plankton. They are all too often sold onto the customer with the promise they will keep away algae when in theory they may assist, but certainly wont survive alone on algae without some supplementary food being added also. I think its a shame as Kev said that these lovely invertebrates are sold in the trade when I would say at least 90% of them do not survive. As Kev said it takes a long time for them to grow and its a shame they dont last long once introduced to a tank. It can a while for them to die,but its usually from hunger.
Id say it will be ok until Tuesday and Id return it then if I was you.

Yeah it will be and again thats the reason I feel they shouldnt be sold in petshops but cest la vie.
At least you wont risk your own fish Mark by keeping it in there and it dying and then polluting your tank.

Mark

Your right it might be sold to the next poor sole but the more people that are informed the better.
If enough people are informed and refuse them the shop just might stop taking them from the supplier.
Fair play to you for asking what you need to do to keep them.
