Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

an apology

just reading over the last few posts and i realised i might have been a bit out of touch, i just had a bad couple of weeks, no excuse i know. first of all i would like to apologise to JohnH as i should never of questioned his decision, he is just doing an unpaid job that some times goes unappreciated. second i would like to apologise to Cichlidguy for winding him up, if i left well enough alone things would have probably blown over. third i would like to apologise to Seahorse for my part in the trouble on their wall. fourth i would like to apologise to the forum as a whole. if anyone else took any offence i would just like to say that i am sorry. i thought that cichlidguy was unfairly treated and i thought i would stick my big nose where it was not needed. i felt "i" alone blew things way out of proportion. i didn't mean any personal attacks on anyone, it was more so authority i lashed out at :hammer: . but i could see that some might of felt it was unnecessary, so again if i caused any upset or wound anyone up the wrong way i apologise.

Darren

no worries mate, we all like to challenge authority at times, for my thoughts i just felt john was being unfairly picked out by cichlidguy as you have said he does an unpaid job that some times goes unappreciated, maybe you wound things up a bit, but i hope you see why i jumped to johns defence there, i personally have no ill feeling or upset towards you regarding this, and hope no one else has, you may have stirred things but you were not the one having a go at Johnh, i feel johnh and everyone else will appreciate the apology and your intergrity. As far as I'm concerned the matter is closed.

Of course I accept the apologies from each party and appreciate the sincere manner in which they were offered, I also acknowledge the support offered from the respondents.

While on the Forum, I need no make an announcement to every one of you, since I have been told of private messages and emails which are circulating regarding me.
Last week I was brought to Dublin to face a European Extradition Order after an allegation was made against me for an alleged crime supposedly committed 25 years ago.

For obvious reasons I will not discuss this allegation further, but my guess is that many, if not all, of the Forum members will have had 'the email' or heard the circulating rumours.

As a result of the allegation I stood down as Administrator last week since it would not be appropriate to continue in this position while the allegations were pending, but when they are disproved I would be more than happy to resume the task (if the opportunity arose to do so - ie if you wanted me back).

So, you can see, my resignation was not as a result of any discord on our Forum, but for other more pressing reasons.

I hope that all of you will not regard this allegation against me as a reason to leave the Forum, it's a great resource for Fishkeeping in Ireland and deserves the support of each and every one of you.

John

I must say that I have found you, JohnH, to be a gentleman as Administrator on the forum and as a gentleman in meeting you.

Your contributions to the forum is more than just as an administrator: your knowledge and eagerness to help others has been joined with that difficult job of being admin, and you've more than often mucked in with the more humourous side of life and fish-keeping within threads as proof of the experience you have in fish-keeping.

Best wishes with everything.

people carrying out witch hunts should cop on, the only FACT you know is JohnH is a forum member (a well respected one at that) and everyone i talk to that has met him said he is a nice person. ive read the link that is circulating and it will go no further

false allegation take place and convictions get passed on these basis, i for one can put my hand on my heart and say i have been a victim of a miscarriage of justice. i pleaded with the authorities to get the injured party to point me out, i was never given an identity parade, the person just arrived at the side of the road and said it was me, probably because i was the nearest person in the area. do you know how hurtful that was? after i begged and pleaded my innocence. that pain was worse than the brutality inflicted up on me and the conviction i received. i lost a lot of respect for human kind over that and turned into a very very angry young man hence my hatred for any kind of authority. so please try reserve your judgement and hope honest justice prevails. god forbid an innocent mans life is turned upside down by gossip merchants.

JohnH, I dont think you should need to discuss any reason why you decided to step down. I dont know the in's and out's and was not party to any of this info until you said it in this post. That takes courage and shows a genuine person. Ive only been on and off here lately in the past few weeks as Im busy with other stuff, but I always look out for JohnH, he's been most helpful during my years on the forum and Ive no doubt many more will recognise that also.
