Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello again people, I think that a case that many of the Members' profile information has become 'lost' at some point with server upgrades so could you please all go to your personal profile (after logging in, of course) and where you see the the icon of the little house with the red roof would you put your location there (Ireland isn't really enough).
This will ensure that everyone else can see what part of the country you are in which would be particularly handy if you were offering fish/goods for sale, but also it's nice to have a rough idea for the rest of us to know from which part of the country, or even which country, you are situated in.

Thanks in advance.

aha, I see the method has changed so go to 'Profile' as before, then the blue bar to the right of your avatar (can't stop wanting to call it 'aviator') has a little box on the right-hand side which says 'edit'. Select this and the middle option is 'profile information'.
This will allow you to add your location and a whole pile of other relevant information such as whether you are male or female (sorry, there isn't a box for the "not sures") ;) you can even tell everyone such earth-shattering information as your twitter and facebook details etc etc. Plus you will be able to add your date of birth and everyone else can know when your birthday is and send you a card! (I can't do that though - it doesn't go that far back!).
You can even then add a 'signature' at the bottom.
Click 'save' and away you go - everyone will know all sorts of details about you!!!

I'm being very honest here John, your turn of phrase and elucidating comments on posters queries is not the work of anybody on the wrong side of any Age, it's a pleasure to be the recipient of and witness to, some lovely English on this Forum.

Hi John. Great idea of suggesting setting up the location in profile, even though this means the chatter on SC will drop significantly.

ALL JOKING ASIDE NOW.
WE ARE (YET AGAIN) REQUESTING THAT EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU WHO HASN'T UPDATED THEIR PROFILE AS OUTLINED ABOVE DO IT NOW!

THIS IS IMPORTANT - NONE MORE SO THAN IN THE "TRADING" SECTION - BUT EQUALLY SO THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE OF THE FORUM SECTIONS.

REGRETTABLY, IF THIS IS NOT DONE WITHIN 48 HOURS ANY TRADING POSTS NOT CONTAINING LOCATION OF CONTENTS BEING OFFERED/REQUESTED WILL BE DELETED UNTIL THIS HAS BEEN ADDED.

Sorry for the CAPITAL LETTERS, but this has to be stressed, and that's a 'gentle' way to express the importance we are attaching to this request.

totally agree Johnh, plus i have seen posts where people have asked for location where it is clearly under their avatar, if everyone has it done it will save these annoying posts wasting valuable server space which can be better used on the forum

Can we not do something with this when it comes to the registration process as in have this a must before we can approve members so when there are signing up they have to enter it?

Just an idea for new users

From what I can see on the set up, it is a compulsory field at the registration stage - maybe it was changed recently but that's the set up now.
Hope this helps.

Sorry Valerie do you mean that you have to add it in now when someone is signing up?

I was just looking around the back-end to see if this was the case or could it be changed but this was nothing that i could see when it came to location?

Maybe i missed something (Whats new  )

This used to be the case, in fact there was a requirement that prospective new members provided a bona fide address as well, in order that it could be confirmed that they were a real person!
Also, this covered Darragh as then no-one could make scandalous and possibly litigious remarks! At least with definite address information he could have access to that person if it was necessary.

I, for one, would like to see this practice resumed, anonymity is fine, until it gets abused.
