Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Legal threats

Legal threats was created by JohnH (John)
A member of the Forum (or, more accurately an ex-member) has made a threat of legal action against this Forum due to his posts being deleted in the Trading Section. The guidelines are there for all to see - contravention of one or all results in the post being deleted.

This is being posted in order to stress that any future Legal Threats will result in removal of that person's membership of the Forum.

We try to run a fairly relaxed regime here - and want it to remain thus.

The Rules are formulated for the well-being of the Forum and its members and I personally do not consider any of them (the Rules, not the Members) to be in any way, shape or form extreme or autocratic.

I hope you all agree.

Its only a threat of legal action cause no lawyer in the country would put their name to a letter of such tiny petti bitchyness as this.

That's a joke surely John? Imagine the guy walking in to his solicitor's office and saying "yeah i want to bring a case against them, because they removed my post because it was against their rules". He would just be laughed out of the place   Was this our friend from a few months ago?

No, not actually - someone else entirely.

However, this post was put up mainly for the benefit of the ex-member concerned - in order that he will be able to see why he can no longer log in and to point out the new amendment regarding any future 'legal threat' aimed at the Forum.

While I wouldnt like to antagonise any individual who Threatens Legal Action on a hobbyist web site, I feel that its only appropriate to point out that certain individuals take life way to seriously!!!! If I took forums as seriously as some people Id say id a had a heart attack long ago!
This is a site to share experiences and learn from other peoples mistakes, If what you say means that much to you (get overly offended if someone disagrees or deletes your post or whatever) I may suggest a holiday and a chill pill.
Forums are fun and informative, if you see them in any other light (as a regular member) then you may wish to check reality and come to your own decisions on weather your continued membership is healthy to you.

Have to admit, I don't find it a fairly relaxed regime at all.
I hardly post any more as do many of the older members..

I feel there is too much moderation, it's way over the top. We shouldn't be enforcing rules that stop people from posting, there's not enough people posting as it is..

I can assure you John that I would be far more 'active' if it weren't for the over zealous moderation.

Indeed forums are about sharing opinions, not about enforcing rules..
Perhaps you should be a little less 'active' yourself and give the forum a little space to develop.

I agree, and am surprised to hear of suggestions of over moderation. If anything I would have thought the moderation was very light compared to most forums.
I have a great deal of respect for any individual who gives up so much of their time to such a thankless task as forum admin.

It seems to be a sad reflection on the f@*%ed up society we have, where people, whom the rules don't suit, revert to litigation.

Lets keep this about fishkeeping and leave the politics to the gob3h1tes in the dail

I don't know an ordinary keeper of fish is, but we are all that anyway.
Irrespective, the forum is for all to post under some reasonably relaxed rules.
I am also not sure where the post in question was deleted from.

On some forums, by the way, some moderators remove posts if the moderators does not agree with the posters opinion....and nothing to do with forum rules. That does not happen here.

Where the Hell is this coming from, maybe this Forum isn't as clique ridden as others I could mention, where the Hell would we be without Rules? My attitude and advice would be, If someone doesn't like it, leave, don't harbour grudges or feelings of discontentment and lurk waiting for someone else to shoot the first Bullet.

The Forum has had a good influx of new members who will, in turn, become old members, lots of them have been following the site and have expressed their liking for it by joining.

I acknowledge the thread ought never have been allowed to start, for which I am guilty and apologise.
It was in no way because a moderator did not agree - it was following the dictates of the post mentioned above.

I really must try to remember that quote from Godwin, not the one I just mentioned - that one is etched forever in my memory.

Over moderated? What a load of rubbish, what do people want a free for all forum like facebook , twitter or god forbid Boards .ie ,where you can say anything you want about anyone , any place , anything? With no consequences? Grow up a bit, the forum has a few rules with regard to posting, they are clearly written and easy to understand, if you do not abide by them your post may be deleted.

What are the grounds for the legal proceedings ?

Its a bit of no-brainer.
You sign up to a forum with rules/terms & conditions,
with possible amendments to said rules, by majority vote no less.
Then think you can ignore them and take action if pulled up on it ?
C'mon now ?
