Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This year's reminder to set your profile location

As a result of complaints received it has been decided to request (yet again) that each and every one of us makes certain our correct location appears on our Profile - and subsequently under our name and avatar.
This has been requested before:
2012
www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php/forum...your-location#133948
2013
www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php/forum...on-location-location

What seems to be the point most people are complaining about is that they see an advert in the Trading Section but cannot find out where the advertised goods are located and it quite rightly annoys some members.

So, and this was tried before, in future any advertisement (for sale or wanted) which does not have reference to location will be deleted until the advertiser changes his/her profile to include their current location, whereupon the ad will be reinstated.
Here is a link to where you can find how to change your Profile:
www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php/forum...your-location#133976

It has also been decided that - since adding a location to the original application form seems to now be not required - any new applicants who do not add an actual location (and we aren't talking specific addresses here) when making their original application will remain unauthorized until they make this information available.

This will be retrospective, so if you don't yet have your location set, please take the time to do it now - and for those with merely 'Dublin' in their Profile please add the district too.

I'd be pretty sure there use to be a 'settings' option in your profile section that's not there now.

Oh dear,
It looks as though the whole location facility has been temporarily lost - I really ought to have checked it was still there for everyone before this year's reminder was posted.
Still, as far as I have been able to ascertain there is still the facility to add your present location to your signature which appears after each post (mine is a quote from Roger Waters, but also states 'It's a long way to Tipperary' which rather gives everyone a clue as to where I am).
You can, seemingly still add your location to your profile - it just now does not appear under your avatar.
So, please, until this issue can be sorted could everyone please either state their location in their advert or in their signature.
Doubtless you will all see that this is pretty significant for buyers and sellers alike.
I hope the location facility can be resumed shortly, but in the meantime please let's do our best to help prospective buyers and sellers.
John
Edit:
I've just noticed that I still have the little red-roofed yellow house which, when the cursor is hovered over it, gives my location - I had seen this before the original post and (wrongly) assumed it was still the same for everyone.

I did a bit of searching earlier and spotted that your little house was still there, along with some others - I'm at a total loss to know why some have remained while others haven't.

Still, it will all come out in the wash no doubt.

Ive just checked my profile and under the edit tab can change any detail including address.
There is the option to have any personal detail appear on posts or not. Maybe this needs to be reset.
John whats the forums facebook page called?.

Thanks for replying Paul,
Like you, I can change my profile but where previously the information of location appeared under our avatar - making it easy for everyone else to see - now it has disappeared from sight!
This is mainly a pain for prospective buyers (and sellers) it's less of an inconvenience for general Forum usage.
But since complaints were made it needed to be brought up (again).

Here's a link to Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/IrishTropicalFishSociety?ref=hl

But other than a few 'likes' very little has been happening there for ages.

Thanks John, as ever you're a big help. Maybe prospective buyers/sellers can view profiles to get location info.

Delighted some progress is being made to force those either too lazy or too childish not to include the location.

Our thanks (as ever) go to Darragh for his background work - now he has made it possible for everyone to set their location in My Profile>Edit>Update Your Profile so please, especially those who have (for example) merely Ireland as their location (or any other 'fanciful' locations) could you please follow the path mentioned and set a more accurate location. It will help both yourself, but also other members - particularly those selling and buying using the Trading Section.

Cheers Darragh.
