Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Its probably not the new format...The forum tends to go through quiet periods from time to time...

It just means there are no newbies around and all the long term members are well on top of everything as regards diseases, setups, breeding etc...

It will pick up again!

No bad but I would beg to differ with your reply, have tried a few times to access the site this morning on my phone and then earlier tonight on the laptop getting a 501 or something error. This problem has definitely happened since the new format was introduced, sometimes when I can access the main page if I click on something else I,m back off the site again.Read back through the posts of JohnH,s forum upgraded topic www.irishfishkeepers.com/forum/553-forum...orum-upgraded#191714 to see the problems that that have been happening since, you wont be getting newbies enrolling with the problems this site is having and like Robert said some wont be logging in as much .......... when you do its a gamble wether you get access to the site or keep hitting a brick wall....

I'll just add to this to tell everyone that today's 'outing' was a server issue and completely beyond our control.

I'll apologise, but it was equally inconvenient for us, too.

Eventually (I dearly hope) things will get fully sorted though, please try to bear with us in the meantime.

There are a number of things about the new format (incl an update a while ago) that maybe need a review.

Rather than just the top few active threads appearing on the home page on the right, every new post is shown.

But, ease of finding most recent threads or ones to which one had commented is made more tricky with the new format.

On clicking on “Forum”, the site takes the user to:

www.irishfishkeepers.com/forum-15561

but would be best going to here (where Recent Topic, My Topic etc are shown as links)

www.irishfishkeepers.com/forum/index

I only access the forum on the phone and I cannot stand the new layout navigation tbh
I don't have an option to see recent topics or reply, it's simply not there!
I don't have the patients to go searching for where someone might have posted so recently I just don't visit nearly as often!

That's it in a nut shell

Agree with Hammie here. Is there anyway it can either go back to the old version or a new one created do its phone and tablet friendly ?
I wonder how many people now use phones as their source of internet as opposed to laptops now

This is the first time in 2 days I have been able to get on. Soon all the regulars might end up moving to "the other site" that talks about fish.
I still feel this site has the best questions and advice, it's just the bugs need sorting out.
Keep on trying.

Here is a tip for all you phone and tablet users.

Download chrome browser from the app store if it is not already on your phone.

On the top right, 3 dots, will bring down a menu, click the request desktop site. It makes it easier to navigate the site.

tried that.....
none of the browsers seem to give me the menu option!!!!
Thats the only issue I have!!!! Dont have the time or patients to be lookin for topics etc
but things should calm down again soon enough! so then Ill have more time to do more searching (just changed jobs and learning from scratch in a fast paced very very busy office)

Like many of ye regular contributers, I had big problem opening the site in the last month. Thankfully it seems OK now and I can log in daily. Maybe that's the reason why the video competition failed.
