Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A REMINDER

A REMINDER was created by JohnH (John)
In the light of another 'silly' post which has now been deleted it seems an opportune time to remind each and every one of ALL members making posts on the Forum that this is first and foremost a FISH-ORIENTED FORUM and that the place for childish comments and the like is NOT here!

Likewise applies to personal attacks - in fact the Forum Rules are very specific on this point - "attack the post, not the poster".

Time to call a halt to it, it is most apparent that many of the serious Aquarists who so regularly contributed no longer bother, we want to see them return - their absence is greatly felt and the help and knowledge they can impart is invaluable to us all.

So, if you want to make inane comments and snide remarks -

GO ELSEWHERE!!!

We're unlocking this post for comments - pro and con - for a couple of days...unless it gets out of hand, but hopefully it won't, so please comment away.

Hi Gerry,

I think that's the issue, off topics are just that, off topic and should be addressed in the social and rubbish to maintain a thread of serious debate on topic ie, Fish keeping.

ok here's a man in question, listen i dont condone abusing members or calling names and to make a member feel threatened or insulted should result in warnings then removed, but if some one makes a comment that is not to your satisfaction just ignore it, getting in a twist can make the matter worse trust me, johnh now you had a little bit of banter in the post in question it only got out of hand wen insults started, people have a right to talk and to have some one removed from here because they said something witty would be a shame and goes to say something for the reporter, live and let live the true members will be here a long time and you cant discriminate against an irish tropical fish keeper because of their humour

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

I think it is more suitable for me to post the basics of what was in my post in the thread that was deleted this morning, as this describes my feelings on the matter to a T...

I, like an awful lot of other people I know personally, am a bit frustrated with the way it seems nearly every thread descends into a joke these days. This forum used to be one of the best on the internet (for talking about fish) but I can think of so many usernames that are now dormant as a direct result of this forum slowly having less and less to do with fish and more and more to do with football and messing etc. It now just seems to be the home of witty banter.
Some of you guys would know what I mean if you were using this forum 12 months ago.
I've got nothing against any single user personally.

Note: I have doctored this slightly to make it more relavant to this thread. If you would like to see the post as I made it I can post on request.
For the record in case that's what some people may think; I didn't report that thread, I didn't complain about it, ask for it to be removed, nor did I take the insult personally. I would have been content for it to stay up, although I fully respect the decision of the owners or admin to remove it.
Cheers.

There's the nub of most of the blasted cr@p that seems to turn the Forum on it's head WHY POST REMARKS THAT ARE BOUND TO RUFFLE FEATHERS OR CAUSE PEOPLE TO GET IN A " TWIST " in the first place?

I think I said before, a bit of forethought would prevent this happening.
A few breaths and think of the consequences of any wayward comments.

If anyone has issues with a poster re Sales that didn't quite work or deals that went belly up etc, contact the poster , that's what pm is for, the forum is not a conduit by which you garner support to admonish the seller, giver or donator.

My comments are not directed at anyone in particular, it's a generalisation.

All I ask is that issues not pertinent to Fishkeeping should be dealt with elsewhere.

Nope Darren,

I like an easy life as no doubt we all do, it looks really bitchy when the correspondence here looks like people siding with People against other People.

Everyone is welcome on the Forum according to Admin but only providing we all agree to the rules. I don't care how people resolve their differences as long as they use the option provided, ie. PM. It looks so bad when the Topics get personal, there really is no room for it on a Fishkeeping Forum, it begins to look like a free for all and can lead to insults.

I always see the Forum as a last bastion of Friendly chat and advice despite snide remarks and asides been thrown about and used to look forward to " hanging " with the guys but I am starting to dread it and if it continues I feel I might just use pm to share info and bypass the Topics section altogether.

I don't know if I'd be missed and tbh, it doesn't matter to me.

It will only go on if the Guidelines cannot be adhered to, the inclusion of the word Sh£t is a case in point, how many times has it been explained, gone over, said, told etc etc etc that the Forum is open to all ages and everyone should try to refrain from using bad language, it seems a pointless task to ask for some degree of manners etc when you can't even refrain from using bad language. Pretend you are talking to your own child then imagine strangers using it around it, I know I wouldn't be happy and I doubt you would. I'm done on this thread.
