Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Today, for the first time since I stepped (metaphorically) into Valerie's shoes I have been put into a position whereby I had to ban a member - albeit a new member - from the Forum, no warnings, just deleted!

I cannot understand the lack of any sort of consideration for all other Forum members to use language such as was used today.

We are a great community, with Fish as our common interest.
I hope that is how it will remain - everyone will agree, I hope that on this Forum there is no place for such foul and obscene language.

i take it i missed some thing big.i dont see how people could get so worked up and really even feel like they have to use language.people share experience s and advice buy and sell stuff have the odd heated arguement show tanks and fish and share any excitement over breeding or general behaviour of there fish.as a fairly new member me self ive only enjoyed my time on the forum.so if the member was out of line he obviously wasent here for the same reasons as most of us are witch is good friendly people talking about some thing they love and are (highly addicted) to

well thats just my opinion

The guy only has 2 posts. both contained stupid language that were not relevant to the thread. it was nothing major, just pure stupidity.

That's always the danger, of course - but I suspect he gets his kicks from shocking people, getting banned then moving on to another site/forum to do the same again. At least let's hope so.

as I have already said. I can almost 100% guarantee the guy will have no Internet for weeks if I find out what his IP is. My services are there if required.

Are the moderators privy to his IP address.
There is free software available to check each new members IP address, pre verification
The use of proxies is a different matter and much harder to solve, this forum is rather small so I cant see anyone going to the extreme of using a proxy to carry on a vendetta.

although it might be a good idea, you'd have to question the legallity of such action, remember this could be a member acting the blaggard

John,I didnt see the post, but sounds like you'd no option really but to ban the person. Language and personal gripes cannot be accepted on this forum. Opinions yes, insults no, and certainly not in the public forum.
I remember the last person banned John, and I can safely say everyone was defending the forum and not the person writting the tirade of insults and accusations. I think you might remember that one too!!
Anyhow, well done. Back to the people now who want to talk fish!
Gavin

to be honest Dar, the legality of the situation is that I could force the owners of the forum to hand over the users details. Slander is a taken very seriously these days. just because you are online does not mean you can abuse people.
Now lets not lose the run of ourselves, I dont care what the person said and have no intention of going down the legal route but just in case people think they can setup secondary accounts and abuse people and get away with it, they cant.

No idea what was said or posted but can only say to John - hear hear
that is why we have admins to keep us on the straight and narrow and pull us back to the real reason we are all on here - to keep our 'babies' and their environment top knotch

i fully understand this but the appropriate action was taken by a moderator/admin and to give out the ip to another member would probably land the site in hot water, remember he might be reading all this

Dont know nor care what was said but it was obviously serious. I cant understand people using foul or abusive language or terminology. If he/she felt insulted or slighted by something they should have reported it or walked away. No excusing that sort of behaviour and I am glad to see action was taken before it was seen by everybody. There are probably younger members reading whats posted.
Well done

The good thing is that the offending person is now no longer with us, a lesson learned.

Re IP, you'd have to reverse look up it and get the ISP owning the IP, no legal issue there, if it out of hand and violent threats, you can then call the police and refer the IP and ISP to them, they will go to the ISP and get the owner it was leased to on the specific date if not a statically assigned IP

EDIT: You can complain to the ISP directly, they may or may not give the customer a warning.
