Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

In the light of so many new posts now being added to the wrong Forum Category I thought it would be the right time to send this little reminder.
When anyone would like to start a new topic there is a tab in the sub-banner called (strangely enough) "NEW TOPICS".
When you select this option a drop down menu appears and the first option available is 'introduce yourself', some people are appearing to neglect following the menu down to the correct category, which leads to the poor (and in my case) old Administrators having to place the post into the correct category afterwards.
Please select the right category from the menu and then start the new topic, it will then appear where it should do, rather than in the wrong place.

There is a second option available, and this is to select the "INDEX" tab (first one along) which will open a list of all the categories within the 'Index'. You can then select "NEW POST" in the category best suited to your post. (For what it's worth that's the route I go down).

Indeed, thanks John.

I have looked into making the category blank, forcing the poster to select a category if (s)he chooses the "New Topic" tab ; however, this is not possible with the Kunena discussion forum :-((

Thanks - Valerie :)

Hey Valerie, have never used Kunena but have done a bit of programming. Is it possible to put a 'Please Choose a Topic' option in the drop down box (and set it as the default) and if this is chosen bring up a message saying 'Please Choose a Topic'? Just a suggestion which is probably not possible, but just thought I would say it! :)

Yes, I have too ....

I checked but it's so embedded in the system that it seems very difficult to change and even the Kunena specialists don't seem to want to change it on their website :(
It takes the 1st category on the forum ("The Introduce yourself" in this case). So, we could put a locked category so that it takes it. But if the poster forgets to update the category before submitting, the system updates the page, tells you it can't post there and loses the text the poster input there. Which, imo, is no good.
The other solution is to take the tab down totally... forcing the poster to go to the relevant category to post a new topic.

So, at the moment, we'll just stick to what we have and see how it goes. We'll keep moving the posts ... ;)

Valerie :)

There's a couple of things that have to be highlighted here.

1. Colin (Puddlefish) has offered some great suggestions to this site regarding logo etc. which have been totally ignored. Now we all now how good he is!!

2. I offered the services of my brother as a 'helping hand' to the general upkeep of the site regarding technical computer knowledge- totally ignored again!

As far as I can see there are only a few dedicated Admin/Mods on this site which is a little bit sad in my opinion even though they are doing a great job.

Thank you for your comments.

Darragh Sherwin is the ultimate webmaster for this website and he is the one who decides on the actual format/design of it.
If he hasn't come back with regards the logos that were suggested, it's because he's either still pondering over it or he might be busy in real life.
As far as the management of this forum, and seeing the amount of traffic on it, I personally think 2 of us, in addition to Darragh, moderating the site is enough ; but again, ultimately, it's up to Darragh to decide on this.

I am sure we'd hear from him if he had an issue with something. :)

Thanks - Valerie

The logo of the ITFS is a matter for the ITFS club, not this site.

Daragh

PS. I am not the Darragh, referred to in earlier posts - just in case there is any confusion.
PPS. Probably should also point out the Darragh has being very busy lately and away a lot.
PPPS. And finally, there are several people behind the "Admin" title apart from named admins and I think they do an excellent and totally thankless job - speaking from experience.
