Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

anyone got any?
Just starting out fishing again after being away from for years, long story short, I've been given a couple of good rods and a reel by my grandfather who is giving up after almost 70 years of fishing! Anyway he's in his mid 80s and while its his intention to tutor me himself, it could be difficult for him to stand in a river for any length of time to show me etc

I'm going to go ahead and learn on my own (the basics)and hopefully then he can help me with the "here's a better way" tips.

Any tips or pointers would be appreciated

Let him show you the basics of casting, in the back garden, he can sit, if need be.
You don't need to learn casting on the lake/river. Even if you know the basics already, it will please him to think he is showing you.
Once your casting is good, then you can move on to Accuracy and presentation of the flies on the water.
Enjoy your time with your grandfather.

:1 bring a lawnmower and a saw to cut down obstacles
:2 bring lots of flies and line because you are sure to lose some
:3 keep your arm facing down and dont lift your elbow ( same as elbow on a counter while drinking pints lol )
:4 just move your hand from your side and never let it back further than your head.
:5 if all ease fails call down to me and i take you fly fishing for a day

but it works if u do try the back garden take the barb off the hook so you dont get it caught in everything.

I'm doing as much of that as I can, just difficult when he lives nearly 3 hours away!
I treasure every minute with my grandfather! He gave us a bit of a scare a while back! I kinda want to impress him a little if I can too

That's why I've been dry casting the last while, just trying to get the follow thru right at this stage! I've been dropping the tip too quickly and having impact point about 3 or 4 ft from the end of the rod......
Just need to slow myself a bit I think

All what crustycrab said and be patient. If your only casting 3-4 foot then your gonna run into difficulty learning yourself... id say watch some youtube tutorials if you are set on teaching yourself. You will need to learn about the line and know when the load is on or when its off. Are your rod and line a match for weight?.. thats very important. There's not much to it but getting your cast right at the start will make the rest easier B)

A little extra 'tip' here - if you tie on a piece of brightly coloured wool to the end of your leader while learning to cast you will have a better idea of where it is ending up, plus you won't be losing or damaging any flies.

Everything else previously written is good advice - just remember it's all in the action, no real muscular 'force' is needed to cast. All of a sudden you'll be getting it 'right' and then will wonder what all the problem was (at least that's what happened with me - but I'm so old I learned with a split cane rod and a dressed silk line!!!).

Thanks lads....
When money is there, I'll probably get a few extra trips up to the grandfathers for extra tuition
James, I might take you up on that offer some time.....

I honestly don't see myself catching anything (from the water) this year, but I'll definitely have to get out for practice asap
First things first tho, must look for a license lol

Basics first eh?
There seems to be lots of open space up round blessing ton lakes, so I'd say I might take a run up that way some Saturday / Sunday and even spend a while watching other anglers,

Ye won't see many fly fishing on blessington lake to be honest with ye, only the odd few coarse fishing, I could possibly let you know when there's a competition on on ballymore eustace waters. There does be plenty of competitors at the local comps that you could sit and watch for hrs ;)

Btw the slaney is permit free waters with the best fish being your side of baltinglass... might be an ideal practice area.

Get fly fishing tuiton with Glenda Powell based in Lismore on the Blackwater.

It's not cheap and it is'tn particularly close to where you live but you'll learn
more about fly casting in an hour with her than you will in five years practising
from You Tube, books etc.
