Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
Congratulations zig

Here's the tank that won it for me.
I had actually started to document this tank here on the forum some months back, but never finished the thread, because I knew I was entering it specifically into this contest so was going to wait until it was over.
That thread is here and gives a good idea of how this tank was put together originally.

Only thing I got wrong in the thread was the time line, I was a bit optimistic, it took a lot longer to grow out than 5 weeks, more like 10 weeks but we got there in the end.
Thanks very much everyone.

How do you get that grass effect and what plant is it?

Didihno the grass type plant on the branch limbs is actually a moss, I used Java moss in this layout, here's a closer shot of one of the branch limbs with the moss attached.
You just tie it with some cotton thread and it will attach by itself after a while, its not too fussy a plant, it likes cooler water but it also can be an algae magnet due to detritus buildup if you have a high fishload, fish poop or general tank waste tends to catch in it real easy.

Congratulations, great achievement. The tank is stunning. Brilliant to see such a high level of success from one of the forum members in a UK competition.
Daragh thanks a million and really appreciate the favour for the guys at the Hayling show in the UK, they will be delighted, safe trip and have great weekend, thanks again.

Hmmm....probably not for me then, I have a large ammount of fish and algae eating ones at that.it also can be an algae magnet due to detritus buildup if you have a high fishload, fish poop or general tank waste tends to catch in it real easy.
Thanks Zig.

Eh cheers Anthony I was delighted tbh, have a great time in Hayling wish I was going now, next year definitely. Don't forget to heckle the guys doing the aquascaping demo on the Saturday, ye know, in best dublin accent \"that looks bleedin crap mate I could do better than that\" joking, they would kill me if they knew.
Have a great time everyone travelling out tomorrow AND DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH:lol:

Although I may have won the competition they are in no hurry to send the prize! (whatever that is) I have not heard a thing since from PFK magazine but tbh I have been so busy I havent really thought about it until now, Im beginning to wonder now though, I must send them an email.
@Daragh, I didn't know they were going to use that shot at all on the stand, one of the UKAPS guys works in a display company and thats all they do, exhibition stands and the like, thats why their little effort was probably a bit better than most at the show because he got the stand, handouts etc made up for free! Pity I don't like the shot though:huh: ow well cant have everything, thanks for posting it up anyway.
Thanks very much everyone.

Do you think you would have a little time in your busy life to write an article for the site to help strugglers like myself out

Earlier in this thread, Zig pointed people to the following link regarding the set up of his tank :

I hope this helps.

Could you list the types of plants that you used?
Please Log in to join the conversation.
Heres the list as best I can remember
Taxiphyllum barbieri (Vesicularia) Java moss
Bolbitis heudelotii
Microsorum pteropus
Microsorum pteropus Narrow
Monosolenium tenerum
Rotala sp.
Hydrocotyle verticillata
Hemianthus callitrichoides ''Cuba''
Pogostemon helferi
Vallisneria sp.
Cryptocoryne parva
Cryptocoryne wendtii ''green''
Eleocharis parvula
Eleocharis sp.
The foreground plants are mainly 'Hemianthus callitrichoides ''Cuba'' or HC as its known, and 'Eleocharis parvula (hairgrass) the plant on the branched wood is Java moss.
