Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey everyone, a vid of the problem I had with my pond after the neighbours dog went for a cooling dip during the hot weather

Just wondering if it might be an idea to cover the bottom with mud or aquatic compost rather than having the plants in pots, any ideas or how about a way to stop dogs cooling off without the use of violence

Hi. I had the exact same issue with my pond a few years back with my own dog. It's a nightmare.

What's happened is that the mud at the bottom of the pond has been disturbed and has released a load of nutrients into the pond, the algae bloom is feeding on the nutrients. Prob with a massive water change is that the tap water is probably full of nutrients too. Most tap water is. Have you tested the water for nitrites and ammonia? What you need to do is put the plants back in as they will help to consume excess nutrients. Keep them in pots. Then time is your best weapon, eventually the plants and algae will consume the nutrients and the water will clear, you could run a UV filter if you have one to kill the algae too. Fish will be fine as long as water parameters are ok. Justin

Another small problem with having soil (or even gravel) as a pond substrate is that the fish (especially Koi if you have them) will grub around it and create quite a mess too.
Indeed, I had water lilies in mesh pots, but almost every time I looked in the pond there they were up and floating on the surface, the fish had uprooted them!

I eventually put a stop to this by using pieces of an old fishing keep net, wrapped around the whole pot and corm and secured loosely around the plant stems with cable ties. I don't know how permanent this will prove to be but it has lasted for last summer and so far this year also.

Thanks guys, I have`nt put the gravel back in yet, still getting around to giving it a good clean.I put the plants back in with the pots and planted in aquatic compost covered in gravel and so far it seems to be doing the job.I`ll put the rest of the vid up later today, found some great lookin fish in there and great growth on a couple, as I say all these fish were bought in local shops as pet goldfish but to see the size of some now is a real eyeopener and a lesson to anyone planning to keep goldfish in a bowl

Regards

Chris
