Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i'm interested to know what, in most people's opinion, counts as nano? i know size is the main factor, but are there other elements?

When I think of nano tanks I usually think of tank smaller than 50 litres.
I will be interested to hear what other people have to say about it and I m glad to see a nano tank section as I only have nano tanks at home.

To throw Oil onto the Fire, there is also Pico !! The definition of a Nano would differ depending on whether you are using it for fresh water or Marine/brackish setups. You could deem a 55 Gallon Marine tank as a Nano if it were compared to a 120 Gallon Marine setup but I would guess that there would have to be a degree of common sense when taking volumes into consideration.

I would think the term Nano, should also be relevant to the size of the inhabitants you can keep within one of these Aquariums.

As the size of the Tank decreases, so too should the equipment and the stock involved, me, personally, I would consider something like a Juwel Lido, 120 Litre downwards to be classed as a Nano but that is my thought on the matter and I bet many would contest this with arguments for a greater size.

From Dictionary dot com :-
nano-
a combining form with the meaning “very small, minute,” used in the formation of compound words ( nanoplankton ); in the names of units of measure it has the specific sense “one billionth” (10 -9 ): nanomole; nanosecond.

I would consider something being called a Nano when smaller, more specialised equipment is required and the selection of inhabitants reflect the size of the setup including that equipment...

i'd agree that the size and possibly numer of occupants makes a difference. a black pacu in a 50l tank isn't nano imo

for me, one of the thing that sometimes pushed some no-quite-nano tanks into nano territory is swimming space ie how much the aquascaping/plants leave for the fish/inverts

oh dear, I guess this was one of the reasons there wasn't a nano section. Perhaps there should be a nano definition just for the nano section here, maybe agree on a fresh and marine size below which a tank is in the nano section?

Wonderful idea Q_Comets...... these are issues that plague Life, how long is a piece of String etc, it could be ironed out into sections that is perceived to be Nano by the general Aquatic Community, it's pretty clear if you look back at the development of equipment and setups that have become available by Dennerle, Fluval, Red Sea, Blau, Eheim and so on that small is usually within the smaller volumes of Water..

It would be intentionally antagonistic should someone post about their Nano Aquarium when what they are posting is about a 120 UK Gallon Reef Tank. I think, within the boundaries of common sense that a Nano is referring to something smaller than what has up until now been regarded as an Aquarium while I know , an Aquarium refers to a container of liquid that supports life in some shape or form.

When you Browse the net looking for Nano setups, the first returns are for items in or around 30 Gallons downwards.

i think setting parameters is reasonable as long as the rules aren't too hard and fast. i can't see JohnH telling anyone "your tanks is actually 50.5  l so i've moved it to the appropriate section"!
