Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Well things got slightly fecked up with other tank, I kept staring at it thinking it should be slightly bigger. I am still trying to figure out how in 3 weeks, after years of not having an aquarium I have gone from my 4 year old saying I would like a fish, to having 3 tanks, though only 2 will be in operation.

Anyhow today I visited Seahorse Aquariums (damm you :P :) )and came out with a 35 litre tank so have decided to start again. So nobody say its too small I dont need or have space for 9 foot tank in sitting room, mind you if I seal the walls, spaces, door and windows the entire room could just be an aquarium :).

Now I am thinking of planting up the tank. Interior decoration of tank not my thing I am crap at it. At the moment I have 2 lots of Elodea or Brazilian Waterweed from previous tank. But I would like to add some Anubias and java Moss and a couple of moss balls but we shall see and some silk plants. The way all of ye plant up your tanks are amazing something to aim for.

After my visit to S.A. I would like a guppy tank perhaps with a betta and shrimp, though I have read occasionally betta attacks guppies cause of their tails so planting to give place to hide. Also what plants would suit these? would above be ok?

So all advice welcome.

Hi zuda
When it comes to male bettas it really depends on their personalities.
I have no experience keeping bettas and guppies but I kept bettas with shrimps and some of them were leaving the shrimps alone and others where constantly chasing them around to the point I had to bring back the fish to the shop.
Now I have dwarf corries and ember tetra with my shrimps.
If you want to keep shrimp they will love the moss especially the shrimplets.
Do you research for the anubias as some of them wil grow way too big for the size of your tank.

Thanks for that Anthony

Well I am still deciding whether to get shrimp or not in the back of my head they remind me of lice but then they look really interesting in tank but then also they seem to breed really quickly. Im definitely getting guppies and have yet to decide about a betta. I like the look of the endlers also.

I've stuck with just the 2 Brazilian waterweeds for the moment and have used silk planting elsewhere and some ornaments also.

It might just end up being a guppy tank with endlers. Would the tank size also allow for Otos?

Hi zuda

I've a 30 lite nano aquarium myself with I'd take a guess at it at 25 or so crystal red shrimp in it at the moment and it looks brilliant! Loads of activity out them! I think with these sized aquariums your better off with nerita snails, very attractive shells and great scavengers. My expericne with them has been great and they haven't done any damage to my plants but maybe someone else has had a different experience with them. Anubias barteri Nana might be a good bet too :) hope this helps

As a footnote to the excellent advice already given and to answer your question, your tank would be large enough to accommodate - say - four Otocinclus. They're great little workers and leave 'no stone unturned' (well, metaphorically) to search out every vestige of algae.

Have a male beta in with my guppies for about a year now.....
He munches babies all right, but leaves the adults alone!
Now they are in a bigger aquarium, I'll get a fry box to save them some time! No point in buying more all the time when with little work I can grow my own
