Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Your only option is to keep a few shrimps, I wouldnt keep any fish in a small tank like this.

I have an empty one of these and I was wondering about setting up a nursery tank for breeding bamboo and amano shrimp ,what kind of water perameters do you need I know it has to be slightly salty?

There are quite a few Fish that would thrive in such a setup, such as Scarlet Badis, Chili Rasboras, Killies (small species) a few endlers, a few Emerald danios, etc etc, the reason I say this is because I have done this for years, just make sure you put in something in the way of spindly Bogwood, plants etc, to break up the water column into different areas, it relieves the boredom of what would otherwise be a container of Water.

Unless you were putting a betta in it I wouldn't put bother considering any fish in it unless a certain type ye have always wanted to keep that'll work... I'd stick to shrimp!!
Personally I don't like nanos (apart from certain species and shrimp) because their very confined for alot of small fish even and I dunno... a fish has never spoke to me to say its thriving and happy in such a small tank so I wouldn't assume they are!!
Just my 2cents

Some of the Fish I keep in my MANY Nanos have bred or are showing signs of doing so, the fact that these Fish are doing this is, to me, a conclusive sign of the suitability of their surroundings, not being sentient beings, they cannot afford me the pleasure of a conversation conveying their perceptions, I will use this as MY Yardstick for Piscine contentment.

Paul,
While I wouldn't be the greatest authority on Shrimps I did look into trying to breed Amanos (and I think the same applies for Bamboos too) and I was told that they actually need a fully marine environment when the larvae depart the host parent. In the wild, seemingly, they go out with the tide and grow in the sea - returning when adult to reproduce.
Now, this is only what I was told so I cannot vouch for this at all, but the person who told me this is a greater authority on all things Shrimp than me - so maybe someone here can either authenticate or utterly refute this information.

Sorry homer, I wasn't getting at you personally but more that alot of people share the same view on it, I know you have a vast knowledge of fishkeeping and wouldn't dispute your experiences or methods so sorry again if I came across like I was (I can myself how it would)

Resurrecting this thread rather than starting a new one as I was given a 10l cube myself yesterday. I have no clue what I can do with it.

I was thinking killifish, I have a pair of Aphyosemion australe (Lyretail) in my 90ltr community tank that I was thinking of rehoming here as they seem quite reserved in the big tank.

Any help would be great

A single male Betta would look great or if looking for something a bit different you could try a pair of pygmy sunfish or a group of heterandria formosa
