Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a 15 litre tank that I want to set up at work.
I want to keep the set up as low tech as possible.
I have a small hang on back filter that I will be using.
I'm hoping to do a planted tank with miracle grow substrate and a gravel cap.
Would a 50 watt heater be ok or should I get a 25 watt.
Also the only place I can put this is on a north facing windowsill would I be ok without any light.
I'm not going to be setting this up for about 4 weeks yet and hope to post step by step pictures.
I'm thinking of stocking it with guppies. Probably 3 or 4.

50 watt heater is perfect..

Probably the only plants that will grow or even survive without a lamp are Anubias & Java Fern...

You will probably need some kind of reasonable light unit to grow anything else

Also just a suggestion but instead of Guppies maybe consider Galaxy Rasboras ..smaller and prettier fish IMO..

Cheers for your help gunnered1972
I'll keep an eye out for the rasboras
I may be able to move it to a west facing window might improve the light situation.

Watch out for dreaded algae growth...Very common in tanks beside windows...Algae loves natural sunlight !

Yes keep away from natural sunlight, algae is a definite. Had my terrapin tank in conservatory and had so much algae from.natural sunlight. Got myself a uv stereliser and all sorted now. Doubt u would get one for a 15l!

One of my shrimp tank is on a west facing windowsill, i had to put a piece of cardboard between the window and the tank as the fluctuations of temperature were too much.
Your tank is less than half the volume of mine so i leave you imagine what could happen with a day like today.
Just give it a go and see what happens.
For a small volume like that i would consider some shrimps, they are quiet interesting to watch.
If you have a desktop or bedside lamp, you can use that to light up the tank.

I guess today I would be having shrimp for lunch Anthony !!

Definitely going to give it a go. If it isn't stable I can move the inhabitants elsewhere. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

You wont have any trouble on the north facing window regarfing temp or algae.
Give it a go with java fern, it is a fern who grows in shaded spot on river banks in asia.
Comes to the worst as i said you might be able to find a free lamp lying around at home or at work.
