Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Video Competition - it's time to give it a go.

We are (very anxiously) finally announcing or very first Video Competition, by way of an experiment.

Here is a brief rundown of the Rules (such as they are) - we'll run this until the end of May and see whether it has been any sort of success...or a dismal failure.

Please restrict the video length to a minute, or shorter.
The stipulation is that it has not been shown on this - or any other Forum or website (so must be an entirely new clip, although the subject matter can have appeared previously - just not the competition entry video clip).

The subject matter must be Fish, or Fish-related.

One entry per Forum member.

No 'pro' software effect to be used - better explanation to follow, along with other 'rules' as and when we think about this a bit more.

Entries should be sent to

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

in the form of a url link to the Hosting site of your choice (Youtube, photobucket etc).

I'll ask Daragh Owens to write a small addition to this which will outline the way to upload your video and obtain the url to forward.
Hopefully he will be covering taking Videos in his talk at next Tuesday's meeting - so another reason why it shouldn't be missed!

This competition is kindly being sponsored by Maidenhead Aquatics, Carlow and for this inaugural round it has been decided that Rob (Sandtiger) from there will adjudicate all the entries. This may change with future rounds but it is felt that as the sponsor will be donating the Prize it's only fair that they get an input into the competition rather than merely doleing it out.

John

So dust off the Video Cameras (or, in my case, find out how it works) and get filming.

Great stuff John, given the success of the photo comp I'm sure this will be very popular with the folks here.

Andrew this competition has been in the Wings for months, so it is great to see it get an airing.

As to how to upload the video clip, I don't use Photobucket so I can't comment on them, but for YouTube it is quite simple:

Set up an account it you don't have one - it's free.
Remember you username and password!
Select "upload" button and point to your video file and leave it to upload.
When it is uploaded if you play it back the address of that video will appear on your web browser
Select is and paste in a thread here, no special instructions, it will appear is a Window.

Example, if after uploading your browser address shows

http://www,youtube,com/watch?v=k1Gu_m5BtLQ [fullstops changed to allow link to display as text]

Just paster that here and it will appear like this:

Best of luck to all that enter.

John

I think you need to be clearer about:

"No 'pro' software effect to be used"

Competitors will need to cut their video to one minute and may want to include more than one clip within the one minute etc. I assume that is allowed.

I am assuming that you don't want people to use fancy software like Sony Vegas or Final Cut to add affects etc.

A couple of replies.
Please bear in mind that this is really being worked out 'on the hoof' so be kind and try to bear with me on this.
To me the description 'pro' software is my way of saying "No 'pro' enhancement" of the videos.

Music - that's really up to the person submitting the video - but be aware that if you use copyrighted music the whole thing is very likely to be removed by youtube, or whoever.

In order to try to retain the same 'anonymity' we have with the Photo competitions all submissions should be sent firstly to the Forum competition address:

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

posting directly onto the Forum will not be possible as this thread will be locked to avoid any confusion in this respect but any further queries can be sent by PM to me and then I will add them to this thread - along with the appropriate answer.
As mentioned at the start, we are really 'working this through' as we go - so please bear with us.

Oh yes, the prize is to be announced, but likely will be a €50 voucher for Maidenhead Aquatics.

You will see that anonymity has had to fall 'by the wayside'...but since the Sponsor will be adjudicating it isn't so relative - especially as it's looking like this will be the only entry anyway.
John
If there are any comments or observations this thread is locked but there is an open one especially for that purpose.
If I was clever enough I could have the word 'here' as a direct link, but here, for the 'ordinary' members is the link in it's 'old' form:

Could I just point out - for new members - that we need the Forum user name to be sent to us (to the above email address) exactly the same as if it were an Photo competition entry.
AND the clip is to be confined to one minute (or thereabouts).

This has just been pointed out to me but was not entered in the 'proper' fashion - why didn't you read the rules regarding entering Bermo?
Anyway - here is the final entry for this scintillating competition.
Entries will now be forwarded to Sandtiger for his judging.
Good luck to all entrants - and thanks for troubling to enter.

Well it was quite tough to pick a winner, some good looking aquariums and livestock on view.

I decided that entry no. 7 would be my choice as winner, so congratulations to you no.7

There will be a 50 euro voucher instore for you to collect, presumably JohnH can let me know who is the winning recipient.
