Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The next meeting of the Irish Tropical Fish Society is on Tuesday 8th September at 8.30pm in the upstairs meeting room of Rosey O Gradys Pub, Harolds Cross, Dublin 6.

Our recent discussions included the new Micro Crabs and also the forthcoming Hayling Island Festival of Fishkeeping in mid October.

Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like to discuss or show (video etc), how to build a tank or fix a leak or anything you want advice on in general.

Membership forms will be available on the night and new members are always welcome.

Don't forget the library books that are available (details on below link)

one or 2 of the forum members have kept these before, maybe this previous post can help
www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...ew/catid,5/id,42116/

or maybe this website
www.axolotl.org/index.htm

On another note if anyone coming to the meeting on Tuesday has some spare Java Moss and or even a microworms starter culture (my last one got coffee spilt into it - arghhh) I would be most grateful to trade for something else.

See you soon

Mine might be contaminated with killi eggs and the odd snail. You could have a fully stocked tank just by adding the moss. Killifish, shrimp and snails
I dont have any microworms at the moment. They dried up while i was away.
So what are you planning to breed in this tank? If it's the gardneri you would probably be better of with some spawning mops.

I was looking at trying my hand at the Galaxy Rasbora/Celestial Pearl Danio (whatever you want to call them nowadays), but may instead try the Boraras Maculatus.

My killies are happily breeding in my 70l community, the other occupants being the aforementioned Galaxy and Dwarf rasbora plus young male endlers growing on from my 120 litre.

I have thankfully got the snail population under control (thanks to Darragh Owens) for letting me know what snail eggs look like !!

Any assorted life that piggybacks on the Java Moss is no problem, all i need to find now is a brine shrimp net for catching the fry but i will probably use a small plastic cup

Don't use a net on them or remove them from the water. IME they can die quickly once they are removed from the water.
Use a tub or turkey baster so they are kept in water. The water you move them to needs to be the same as the breeding tank. You could use a hatchery in the breeding tank for the first week or two.
