Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'll be treading carefully

What are my water parameters?.....ummmmm????
you should not ask me such embarrassing questions.....I don't bother with such things. :D

In my books it's "do as I say, not as I do"

The tank is unheated....but during spawning it was at 28 (a bit higher than I would have really liked); it drops to 25 or 26 on the coolest nights (like we've had recently).

The 28 C is unavoidable as that is the temp of our front room....yes, it is sweltering here.

The water is normal tap water and very mature.
The fish were kept in that with a peat floor not to lower the pH but to increase a certain level of oxidation....ie I don't bother too much with pH so long as the RedOx potential is correct.

To counteract the oxidising RedOx of the water, I supplement their food with reducing agents.

The water was kept as black as coffee.

The pH of the water would be kept just above 5.5 to enable a decent biological filtration....any lower and the filters would effectively stop.

Now, just prior to spawning, I added R/O water to give a little jolt to the water....again, not to adjust pH but to adjust conductivity and RedOx balance a little.

@JohnH.....the parents brought the youngsters out for a stroll tonight. Difficult to count, but I saw 30 to 40. So, if they are viable and no disasters happen then a pm will come your way in the coming while. ;)

Hi Ian,
Any update on your transvestitus spawn? My female emerged today with a fairly decent sized spawn!

They are doing very well Jamie.

I have some videos, but haven't loaded them to YouTube yet......yeah, I'm being very lazy.

Still difficult to count the young.....there could be 20 or 30.

I have a feeling that the parents spawned a second time.....but the secrecy makes that difficult to ascertain.

Well done on your spawn.....keep us updated on that.

That's great news! Did you leave the fry in with the parents the whole time?

@Ricko.....the fry are still with the parents. I plan on keeping them together for a while.

@Davey_c......I aborted the sjoestedti spawning as the male became uber aggressive. So, female is being fattened up a little. I also wanted to concentrate on some other killies that were in a more urgent need of spawning (some Nothobranchius that are pushing along in age now). The sjoestedti are good for breeding for a good few years; the Nothobranchius don't quite have that luxury.
