Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi I have set up a new 4foot tank which has been running for three weeks now.

It is still cloudy i have a internal filter and an external filter, it cloudy green colour.

I have bogwood in the tank but this was soaked for a couple of days before being put in the tank.

Any help or advice would be fantastic.

Does the tank receive any direct sunlight? If so, you are most likely experiencing an algae bloom. This is nothing to worry about but can be annoying .
A short term solution would be to get a bottle of "Green Away". This is a flocking agent that causes the algae to clump together into particles large enough to be caught by the filters or fall to the bottom for vacuming.
If moving the tank to a shaded area isnt an option, get yourself a UV Steriliser. This will kill the microscopic green algae before it becomes a visible problem. An 11W bulb should do the trick for your tank.
Hope this helps.

Also, The cloudiness could be a white bacterial bloom, stained a greeney yellow by the tannins being released by the bogwood. The cloudy bloom should go down by itself over a few weeks but the green/yellow/brown colour will only increase. some really like this staining of the water but others, like me, cant stand it! I used "Seachem Purigen" to polish my water but a pouch of activated carbon in a hi-flo part of your external filter will have the same effect.
The UV Steriliser will also kill/keep away the bacteria that is causing the cloudiness by the way.

Also you could try fillterfloss in your filters!
And dose the tank with easylife filter fluid medium.,
Take the sponges out of your internal filter and wrap them in fillterfloss,
Pop them back in and double dose with the easylife stuff,
It's quite expensive but it's very good for getting good water clarity!

You should try putting activated carbon such as the JBL Carbomec Activ in your external filter. You get 2 packs of carbon and a net bag for approx 11 euro.
The carbon should make you water crystal clear very quickly unless ther is some other underline issue with your setup.

Best of lick.
