Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Vicent,
how is the fish doing now? where did you keep the inverts during the lower salinity treatment, how is the general overview.
Regards
sean

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Mornin,

Well,,,everything seems to be fine with the exception of the clowns,,,,,,one died about 2 weeks ago,,,,the other one seems to be very \"introverted \" now,,,hes basically hanging over a rock i have in the tank...doesnt swim around...except at night time when its dark,!
Then he turns into Mark Sptiz mode,,,

As for the rest of the fish , they all seem to be fine, all eating well,,they look well,,,,,acting pretty happy, the clown wrasse and Royal Grama look as if they have grown a bit....ive a blue cheeked goby whos digging holes all over the place,,,hermits who keep swopping shells into bigger ones, 2 cleaner shrimp who have moulted twice in the last 4 weeks, and they seem to be SLIGHTLY bigger as well.
The live rock is gettin darker by the week, I now have about 350 euros worth in the tank ,,,,,,theres some algae but, I like the look, and ,,,wont let it get outta control.
Ive slowly reduced the usage of organic aqua,,,tring to get to the stage the tank would have been at if id cycled properly,,,
Ive added an extra light fitting to the tank as i have mushrooms / toadstools and a bit of coral in it
If i knew how to post pics r vid clip i would,,,,

Yet again, let me say thanks to all who have offered advice .its really appreciated...and for anyone new taking up this hobby,,,all I can say is,,LISTEN to the advice offered and DONT rush it..

Vincent

Hi Vicent

left them in the tank...........i didnt drop it that much,,,they havent suffered,,it actually transpired the salinity level was initially a little too high in the first place,,,
Ive lowered it down, SLOWLY as you advised to about 1.020,,,,,,

Am trying to learn a bit more about this white spot...
Apparently it cannot withstand a raised temp /lowered salinit,,,,when it drops off the fish,,,,is that because its dead??...or does it just drop to the bottom of the tank where the reproduction cycle starts all over again,,,AND,,is there any way to kill this invisible swimming larvae before it re-infects fish ?
While I have your attention,,,ive been readin up on hole in the head,,,...any tips on what could be done to prevent this or cure it,,,no i dont have it,,,im just readin up on all this afflictions n want to make sure i dont get these things in the tank..
Again,,thanks

To be honest Vicent I am a bit confused, even after reading all the posts again , I got the impression you listen to the others before my advise, then read my advise (which came too late as I was away) and waS not taken, came back from holidays with a result (to my suprise as no meds were used to break the life cycle of the diease )then never heard any more, but the clowns have suffered maybe the amunity of the fish has been improved by increasing the temp and lower salinity (by the way 1.020 is NORMAL in a fish only sytem even though they live in the wild at higher for the same reasons people born in Nepal will live better if they move to thicker area at sea level. I still think the reef system is a bit hippy this was allso done when I started in the early 80s and was considered a novice or poorly informed thing to do, lets go back to basics fish only system is easiy as you can treat most things with one drug, a invert only system with no fish is also easy if you have a proper bio filter even though the living rock business will make you believe different a MIX i.e invert and fish tank can be done provided the fish are stocked at a third the level of a fish only system and only after they have been quaatined, I went into a LFS in Mallorca earlier this year they owner booost 8 years experince and told me the anemones will kill off the heavly infected white spot so its OK to keep unquarinte fish with inverts, this probally means dont belive any thing a LFS tells you also dont belive every thing posted on a forum, as the forum only edits bad lauaguage and rudeness to other and not poor technical info especially in a marine forum, If I was you stick to the books as they would not get published if they started posting half of the old wife tales that can be posted in minutes from any PC any where in the world. Martin Moe beginer to breeder is a good one.

I Had white spots on my Clown fish, because I did not have garlic extract i have used plain garlic,
at every feeding for 3 days i have mixed up garlic with frozen food (after defrosted)just a pinch, and after 3 days the White Spats where gone.
